Who is Poacher and Who is Lynx?

Does anyone know about the Poacher & Lynx bots?

I got hit by Poacher/0.005 today and Lynx/2.8.3rel.1.

Just curious as to who these are.

The WHOIS on the Poacher IP (24.25.222.203) resolved to RoadRunner?

The WHOIS on the Lynx IP (166.84.0.228) resolved to Panix Public Access, an ISP.

Poacher is, I believe, the bot that comes with the WWW:Robot module from CPAN in perl, at [perl.com...]

Lynx is a text only browser available on *nix platforms.

The Poacher IP you have is most likely some dsl user testing out their bot creating/ modifying skills.

The IP on Lynx you have is probably more or less the same. In your log files, did they grab robots.txt? You can usually tell "legit" spiders from fake by checking on this. If they do grab robots.txt, then they are more than likely not somebody just playing around, as I suspect Poacher was doing.

Lynx is text based web browser. Although mainly available on unix platforms, it is open source and has been compiled for almost every operating system on the planet. It is highly enlightening to see your web site in Lynx. Can you move around in it and read the text? No graphics, no fonts, no JavaScript. It's pretty much what a search engine spider sees.
