Is it Google or not?

I would expect any Ip used by Google would DNS resolve?!

Hello Good People,

I have been visited by 66.249.64.* IPs, claiming to be GoogleBot in the UA string.

So far any Google visit I noticed resolved to google.com

A lookup resulted in this:

Looking up '66.249.64.44' - Sep 15, 2004 11:38:21
Host lookup failed
WinSock error 11004: Valid name, no data record of requested type

I basically block (GeoIP) every IP that is not originating from Australia, because the site I am running only operates in Australia. I will post question to the latter in a different post.

I initially blocked the IP as class C, but then saw the UA and dsiabled the filter (just in case) :) ... the question remains, it it Google or not?

Thanks for your input.

Cheers,
Max

Googlebot IPs have resolved in the past, but that doesn't mean they always will. The IPs do belong to Google.

Thanks VolatileGX,

I should have done a lookup on ARIN to find out who owns the IPs... it turned out it is part of Google's range. I am pretty harsh when it comes to blocking things :) ...

Thanks again,
Max
