Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600

148,000 hits from the above, but what is it?

This month I got over 148,000 hits from Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 as a user agent. No specific I.P. it seems to vary a lot and it seems to request between 5-8 files and then the I.P. changes. I wasn't watching my stats so I let it go. It's banned now but I couldn't find any information on what exactly this user agent is. Looking at the logs, it always seems to go straight for 'files' which is what got it banned.

I have tried all the search engines but I just keep digging up other people's stats.

I would appreciate any information. Are there any real eye-balls behind that kind of user agent?

http ://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wss/wss/wss_references_webdav.asp

There are references to this in site search.
The search options on WebmasterWorld site search have apparently changed.

Go to the site search (top of page)
Enter the following:
title:WebDAV

You will get some results of that.
Then a new search;
text:WebDAV

Wilderness, Thanks that helped a bit but I am afraid not a whole lot. I know about the Web Dav (basically a collaborative publishing effort), but it seems that it is being used for nefarious purposes(?). Information has been hard to come by. Searches on google, all-the-web, and msn just reveal a few people wondering whether it is a worm from japan or somebody probing for security holes. And then there is A LOT of webstats pages that turn up. I am surprised how common it is on some sites and how uncommon it is on others. The few others that have commented have noted, it seems to request a page every few seconds. My problem is that it seems to go for /files/ and MS Documents and that's it.

Anways, I appreciate the response, but I am still hoping for something more substantial.

Cheers,

Chris
