I recently got slammed by something identifying itself as:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.00; Windows 98)
from:
210.192.120.74
It first went tearing through my pages, one every couple of seconds, giving in each case the referer:
[dakkastats.com...]
After going through many, many pages, including the one which is supposed to be a spider trap (but isn't because it doesn't actually trap anything, just gives false self-reverential links to follow), it finally alit upon one page it seemed to like a lot. It changed the referer to the URL of that page and then proceeded to call the page 168 times, sometimes faster than once a second. Then it proceeded on its merry way through my site, now using the 168-times-hit page as the referer to other pages which are not actually refered to from that page. This time, it got all 404s.
Very odd and annoying behavior. Anyone seen this?

Of course, I meant to have written "self-reFerential," not "self-reVerential." I don't approve of worshipping one's self, and would never put a page that did so on my Church's web site. A Church web site that idolizes itself. It makes the mind boggle.
