They live at [metacarta.com...] but it didn't help all that much about "puf".

Google has nothing.

Has anybody seen this before?

Yes, it was spotted in June of last year coming from a Swiss domain.

I also saw hits from "puf" yersterday, and found the old thread [webmasterworld.com] by searching WebmasterWorld using google and a search string of "puf/0.91beta6a". (Since I block all unknown user-agents, I really didn't have to do anything more.)
