following a link given by claus, i was checking out some open proxy list sites... one of them even had a link to an application to scan for open proxies and also to act as a proxy server... i'll not mention the name of the program here so as to not bring it to the forefront in the search engines... but i will list the useragents that it can go by...

Internet Explorer 4.01
Netscape Navigator 4.05
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows 98)
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows NT)
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows 95)
Mozilla/4.06 [en] (Win98; I ;Nav)
Mozilla/4.06 [en] (Win95; I ;Nav)
Mozilla/4.06 [en] (WinNT; I)

it'll scan http and socks servers on whatever address ranges and port ranges you specify... a quick look turned up a few bugs and speeling errors ;) but over all, it seems to work as advertised... the only real problem i find is no documentation and nothing to tell you how the required verification list is to be formatted...

anyway, the point of this post is to give a heads up for tha above useragent strings and note that they may be this tool scanning your system for an open proxy server...

Thanx for the info.
Too bad there are people out there still using IE4 because blocking that version would cut the BOL list by half.
