This little feller 'grub' turned up poking around in my logs earlier. Seemed quite polite, didn't hammer the server, and identified himself, directing me to this forum..

What is his purpose in life? not quite sure I understand! A database-generating crawler that doesn't have an associated search feature, it seems kinda creepy if you ask me. Maybe I'm being paranoid, someone put me straight?

From what I have heard about grub they are a search engine but they do not host the crawlers. Users can volunteer to let grup work from their system and in doing so help to build a searchable database. In a way like the odp but it's the open search engine project.

To be honest I dont think it will ever come to anything, but who knows. It almost always respects robots.txt to I let it be.

Take a look at some of the threads on grub by searching for it using the site search [searchengineworld.com], this may help you better understand its activities and purposes. On a side note I like their worm guy :D

That worm guy is kinda cute. The following was in my Raw log yesterday:

24.138.50.177 - - [08/Mar/2003:17:21:05 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 622 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; grub-client-1.0.7; Crawl your own stuff with http://grub.org)"
