What's AltaVista up to?

This spider doesn't even bother to check for robots.txt, much less obey it. Anybody else seeing this behavior?

Hey Key_Master

It seems AV has been headed for the out-house for some time :-)

See this related thread:
[webmasterworld.com...]

I was notified by AV that their spidering would CEASE after some period of 403's :-(
Well they did stop for a week or so at the end of October. However as soon as November began they have returned to 403's daily for each and every one of the Scooter bots.

It seems they are beyond both hope and learning :-(

Key_master,

I noticed that when I used AV's translation tool on one of my own sites that I logged a visit from this ip address with my own user agent. I see these occasionally and dismiss them as that.
Of course AV could be sneaking around..I wouldn't put it past them.

It's a bot and not a translation tool. BabelFish is to slow to grab 2-3 pages a second.

fiestagirl,

Funny you mention the Babelfish tool, because although I have submitted to Altavista (free), Scooter hadn't visited me. I used the Babelfish tool today on some of my own pages, suddenly Scooter comes to visit the page I translated. Coincidence or not? :)

Key_Master,

Scooter has behaived here, but my request was from trek30.sv.av.com. What's the difference I wonder?
