can scene variants be alternated in a loop?

I'm a non-professional animated cartoon makers and I've been using Flash recently, which I've learnt how to use just by trial and error.... But I'm still definitely unfamiliar with Action Script, so I wonder if someone could help me to solve the following problem: I have a story made up of 8 subsequent scenes, which has no real beginning or end, and that is meant to be seen as a continuous loop. What I would like to do is to add variants to some of these scenes, e.g. a '5b' scene, and obtain that the latter is shown in place of scene 5 only when scene 5 comes to, say, its third iteration in the loop. Or I'd like to alternate a cycle with scene 5 and a cycle with scene 5b (in place of scene 5), without having to pile all the invariant scenes in the timeline...
Actually, I have no idea if this is possible at all, so any comment or suggestion (if not the actual showing of how to do it...) is dearly welcome.....! :)

I haven't tried that myself, but perhaps someone will chip in with the answer.
