i am trying to buy some good tutorials, have a limited budget. One of them is the basics of flash actionscript MX and is very detailed and well set and the other one is flash mx 2004 actionscript tutorial but the info isn't as rich as the MX one so my question is if i just get the older MX version, will i be fine while working with MX 2004?

Yes and No

You will be able to get the basics of the language, its syntax and of OOP programming but AS is consistantly evolving as its still quite new.

Some functions such as onloadComplete etc will only work on player 7 upwards etc

Additionally some of the language has changed, what worked in MX2004 in some cases will not work in Flash 8 and the same applies to MX and MX2004 (which was a much larger version increment than 2004 to 8 anyway).

Get the most up to date book available even if you do not have access to all the funcions in your version of flash.
