Internet Explorer restricts display of active content

Do I need a newer version of Flash?

I have a site that that I've illustrated with pictures that are Flash animations. I've been using an old commputer with Windows 98 and an older version of MS Internet Explorer on it and everything seemed fine with the look of my site.

I just got a new computer and I went to look at my site using it. My new browser (Internet Explorer 6.0) posts a message when I go to my site that says it won't show my site's illustrations because they contain "active content that could access your computer".

There is an option I can click that will show the page with illustrations but I'm thinking that this message may very well be scaring off some site visitors.

What is the solution here? I'm using Flash 5 and creating my animated pictures as .swf files. Does my problem lie here somehow? Will some newer version of Flash or a different file format solve my problem?

It seems I was confused. This message only appears when you view a file off your hard drive rather than your server. Here are the details (from macromedia.com):

When previewing files locally on your hard drive that contain active content (for example, JavaScript or Flash), the following security message appears in Internet Explorer's yellow Information Bar:

To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer. Click here for options ..."

Note: This security message only occurs if you are viewing files directly from your hard drive. For example, C:\myFiles\myFile.htm. This message does not occur if you use the http:// protocol to view your pages from either a local web server (http://localhost/myFile.htm) or remote web server (http://www.macromedia.com/myFile.htm).

You can resolve this by checking:

Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Allow active content to run in files on My Computer

(Located in the "Security Section", second line)
