File access in Flash

Is Flash allowed to view the client's hard drive?

Hello,

Has anyone had experience setting up a file browser function in Flash? In looking though the classes and functions that come with MX, I don't see anything that appears to get the local directory structure, much less a built-in component for browsing it.

Has anyone heard of or used any plugin utility or method that duplicates the function of <input type="file"> in HTML?

I have not heard of one, but I think you could build one in PHP or ASP and have it populate the flash movie.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it has to be stand-alone in the Flash player. It won't necessarily be embedded in a web page.
