The contents of your Gmail account also are stored and maintained on Google servers in order to provide the service. Indeed, residual copies of email may remain on our systems, even after you have deleted them from your mailbox or after the termination of your account. Google employees do not access the content of any mailboxes unless you specifically request them to do so (for example, if you are having technical difficulties accessing your account) or if required by law, to maintain our system, or to protect Google or the public.
Emphasis added by me
Not everyone [npi] is going to be happy with that.
"No human reads your email to target ads or related information to you without your consent."
This is NOT TRUE as specifically mentioned in the part I quoted above it should be changed to something like "without your consent or under certain circumstances listed below".
We serve highly relevant ads and other information as part of the service using our unique content-targeting technology. No human reads your email to target ads or related information to you without your consent.

If it is a joke - they are going to tick off a bunch of people that could really use something better than the crap that MSFT and Yahoo offers.
That is the only reason I can't imagine this being a joke.
Also - they have done more and more with email - such as news alerts and now:

Sydney still had operational & proven venues from the Sydney 2000 Olympics - so it was the only logical thing to do.
They even had interviews with prominent Australian Olympic 2000 gold medalists, about how great it was that they'd get to compete at 2 consecutive Olympics infront of their home crowd. Tickets would be on sale soon, listeners called in - euphoria.
They fessed up at 8.30am this morning that it was an April Fools joke.
Gmail, on the other hand, just looks like a brilliant marketing strategy being unveiled as we watch. Enough to be credible, enough to be a scam. But - if it was a joke - wouldn't it have been 'exposed' by now? Wouldn't a Journalist have asked the "April Fool's" question?
Wouldn't Orlowski & Brandt have have 'blown the whistle' already if this was a 'joke'?
1) Tell everyone it's up.
2) Point the domain name to the right server.
3) Make and post the pages.
4) Make and post the CGI's.
5) Test the CGI's.
6) Repost the working CGI's.
This is opposed to the schedule the "customer" always seem to want:
1) Make and post the pages to a testing server.
2) Make, test and post the CGI's.
3) Migrate the functioning site to the public server.
4) Tell everyone it's up.
:D On topic, I am truly looking forward to my own GMAIL account. Once I saw the functionality of the Adwords system, I recognized the real effort Google puts in to the user experience. GMAIL is bound to be the best web-based e-mail out there.
And, uh, for everyone who agrees that the box-checking in the personalization lab is silly and outdated... We may have just found out how Google will eliminate the need for actually asking the user what their preferences are. An amalgamation of my incoming mail (the non-canned meat variety) and outgoing mail should tell an algo almost everything about my online life and interests. :) The future is bright...
Its a genious idea for google though (evil genious!)
Prediction: Google will make a killing off of this and the privacy concerns will not initially be a big issue.
Prediction 2: Google will examine the possibility of giving POP access and serving adwords like the mail provider signature. The big hurdle for this step is the concern of actually placing the ad within the email.
Twist: Google will broach the privacy concern by saying humans never read the emails. This will be true but does not address another thing they will do. Which is aggregate the information for further social networking and personalized applications.
Comon, these guys do something every year. If the mail is not it then what is? They never forget this date! Atleast give us a new logo...
Hmmmm something is going on.

Doesn't mention Google at all, or at least I can't tell this early on April 1.
And I thought today would be boring :)

The timing and wording of Google's press release, however, immediately generated speculation on online forums that the news was an elaborate April Fool's prank by Google.
Wow they almost said Webmasterworld. :( .. maybe next time
