Female webmasters?

Just curious to know if there is any female webmasters.
From my imagination, this is a quite male dominated industry, right?

If you're not picking it up from within the content of the post (which is not to suggest that's always possible), you can also give a tad more notice to the left side of the screen where the member names reside. :)

According to the whole male brain versus female brain theories, men tend to do better at technical skills like maths and programming, whilst women tend to do well with language and communication. Webmasters need a range of skills from both traditionally male and female-dominated areas, so it should be no surprise that there's a mix of both sexes taking part.

Of course it depends how narrowly you define "webmaster", because it can mean anything from graphic designer or programmer to a business person who runs the site but isn't involved in the actual building of it, plus many other sub-categories of webmaster jobs in between.

Another thing you can't take for granted is that a male-sounding or unisex nickname actually belongs to a guy.

I am definatley female although my father raised me like a boy. (I'm the son he never had.) I think web design is an area that is both technical and abstract. I started out in art and ended up here.

For some reason I've never been taken for a guy.

I think women tend to call themselves web designers and men tend to call themselves web developers, regardless of the skills mix. There could well be a gender indoctrination issue involved, stemming from the early mental programming.

I do believe there is easily an impression here at WebmasterWorld of male domination though, regardless of the member gender mix.

Not to perpetuate any stereotypes, but I recently hired a friend of mine to handle some of my excess design work; from a creative/aesthetic standpoint she can design circles around me, while I'm a little better with the technical/programming end. It doesn't mean each of us is completely lacking skills in the other area -- I can design okay and she can program okay -- but our strengths match up with the stereotypes.

Once she's doing enough website work I'll suggest she join WebmasterWorld. Right now it's not so much that it would be worth her time.

MBJ, it's ALWAYS worth the time. I wasn't much when I first joined (early 2003 I think), but I visited and lurked a lot for a while. And I learned TONS while doing so.

I'm still not much, but I'm a better much than I used to be thanks to this place....

I really don't think he would be real pleased with the inference that he might be a she. ;)

This community is so well versed that we have people from all walks of life. There are no borders and/or boundaries. Other than the TOS of course.

Well I think this issue shouldnot be taken as negative. There were times when I was about to post similar question and just pressed Ctrl+A and delete.

I think, like what mentioned by some guys above, girls are more into "soft skills".

Anyway, I wonder if there is any female having an ecommerce site and want to hear their stories be it success or failure.

And . . . in all my years as a webmaster, the comments I received in the designs and services, were mostly by females and I appreciated it a lot.

We don't do any site reviews here ever, but when you say "soft skills" maybe that concept could be defined as "right-brain" creative design skills rather than trading in the geek goods.

I knew someone was gonna say something like that.

My point is just that if someone is spending only a couple of hours a week on web work, it's kind of hard to justify spending an hour or two a week reading the boards. You know, the whole cost/benefit thing. As little as she and I are making per hour I'm not in a good position to ask her to spend her precious time on self-development and training. I'll wait until she's making more and/or spending more time on web work.

Me too, well, design to be more specific.

I think the webmaster role requires a certain amount of knowledge on all web-related topics, from programming to design to SEO.

I know some people say to specialise, but in my various jobs I've done, I've been asked to do everything from web design to site promotion to programming. My philosophy is learn as much as you can about everything web-related.

Just in case anyone hasn't worked it out from my nickname, I am female.
