Do links pointing to a subpage help link pop of main domain?

I have a theme-based site and was wondering if I were able to get a hundred or so incoming links pointing to a subpage (for example maindomain.com/subpage.html), will this increase my link popularity for maindomain.com, or will the links only benefit subpage.html's popularity?

I'm getting ready to begin a reciprocal linking campaign and want to know if the above scenario would help my main domain in terms of link popularity?

This is kind of hard to test, but it seems as though link popularity does carry throughout the entire site. Also remember, with AV only relevant links seem to be helping link popularity.

I'm in the process of creating a comprehensive resource directory that other non-competitive sites would find extremely valuable to their visitors. This directory would be a sub-page off my main site. I plan to use this directory as a tool to build reciprocal links with non-competitive but relevant sites. But I've been debating on whether I should have a separate domain registered just for the directory, but then I wouldn't get the potential benefit of increasing my main domain's link pop.

Anyone else have any insights?
