Hi guys, for the next week I am trying to learn everything I can about optimizing pages for AltaVista (going to try to just tackle one SE right now and see how it goes) and was wondering if anyone has any tried-and-true tips? I know that they are constantly changing the algorythm, but I would imagine there are some things that are pretty consistantly good.

I appreciate any help you guys could give me, thanks alot!

Welcome to WmW patrickh,

If I could give you my opinion, I would try and optimize for a different SE......AltaVista isn't really the best referrer.

If you would still like to pursue AV, how old is your site?

Optimize a la Google, then wait, it takes time to rise in the rankings over there,.,,,

I can only say that from my experience Alta Vista does not update regularly- I haven't seen a change in any of my pages in at least 6 months- (or new ones added) and I paid the Looksmart fee to get in to begin with, so my rankings are quite good for several keywords- but it may have more to do with being a "paying" customer...if you are going to concentrate on 1, DEFINITELY optimize for Google and not Alta Vista.

Good Luck!

1) Invent time machine - go back 3 years.
2) Submit pages, return to present day.

Voila - number one listings :)

Of course in the meantime you'll have gone bankrupt due to bandwidth charges from Scooter abusing your site.

If anyone has a simpler solution I would love to hear it. ;)

Ps. Sorry to be flippent ... what I'm saying is that AV doesn't update regularly, and prefers old sites.

patrickh,

Links is probably the be all and end all of the net, esp AV, get targetted links, and do as the others say and optimize for google, as the links will lift you up in AV and if very well targetted links get you to the top of google.

patrickh ... what everyone is saying is to concentrate on optimizing for Google. Its very good advice. I have an old (4 years old) site in AV with pretty good rankings and next to no referrals in AV. I have a relatively new site (less than a year old) with pretty good rankings on Google and fabulous (targeted) referrals.

Forget AV, concentrate on Google and the rest will follow.
