Number of results on Alta Vista

Why so many??

Is there any (perceived) relationship between the number of results returned on a search and the relevancy of those results?
Alta Vista seems to return alot more results than other crawler engines for the same search. Is there any thing in that or is Alta Vista just really good, or really bad, at building its index?

I don't think the number of results has much do with the overall relevancy/quality of the search (unless you took it to extremes). SE's do like to use there index sizes for PR purposes, but I don't think this info trickles down to most end users.
