You know, more and more, I am saddened at the depths to which altavista has sunk. I used to really like them *sniff*, and now they are poised to go the way of so many other failed portals...go, nbci, and next up AV? Ink is giving them a run for their money though.

Point being, try this search at av: [av.com...]

You will notice that in the top 20 results, there is an over abundance of about.com pages. And I dont recall reading that they had a content distribution deal with AV.

The give away, in this case, is that AV doesn't even bold out the keywords they "found" in those pages, which marked them as relevant to their algorithm.

C'est La vi, AV. Rest in Peace. (don't speak french, but I wanted to sound poetic. :) )

Yes - i know EXACTLY what you mean. They blazed a trail that others followed and now they are dying a slow, painful death of a thousand cuts.

Rereading through those results, and I'm still dumbfounded: why on earth would AV do such a thing? Anyone?

"The Search Company." Hmm. Perhaps they should change this to the "content aggregation company"?
