I just tried a search in AV.com for 'hard hat' and a banner appeared, showing three women in a pretty compromising position. Mmm.

It was an advert for 'Entra' whatever that may be.

Thing is, the banner clearly shows a womans nipple - which to me, and the rest of the office seems a bit much to be serving up on an innocent surfers.

I was using AV.com through safeweb so I don't know if this would affect the ads.

Here's a pic of the search:

Italian: "Enter" and then it goes on "only for adults".

Didn't know, though, that you over there on the other side of the Channel could be so upset about a nipple...

wow.

Just did the search, I was sure they couldn't be that off their rocker...wow.

So if I'm searching for some 2 word combo phrase that some p*rn monger might have paid for one of the words for a banner, I'm going to be subjected to adult ads, too? Things are getting a little out of hand...

No, not in this innocent context ("hard"). Well, at least we wouldn't admit it...
(admit in the sense of permit, of course!)

just did the search and yes.. I got that ad....

AV has to be very careful how they place these types of ads, AV is amainstream site accesible to everyone. I guess just having "hard" as the first word triggered the ad. now if the search was more specific, maybe its OK..

This is far too lax AV... extremely poor judgement.. what you make on theis deal with the Entra crowd you will lose many times over on brand equity and bad PR..

..So I thought, 'what are these people complaining about surely you are just using Alta Vista with the family filter off- I do.'

So then I put the 'family filter' on and the advert was still there, even with the 'All' filter on.

Is it any coincidence that s*x.com recently changed tack with its new ownership and has decided to start showing 'cleaner ads' (I'm told :)- wired news, lost the reference.)

Think about it all those cash rich porn sites with nowhere to show their banners and a cash-poor search site with no banners to show.

Just an aside, is it Altavista's fault or the ad server - Doubleclick.

The same DC who are reporting their results this week- one of them must be desperate for the cash. Look for poor quarterly earnings...

"Didn't know, though, that you over there on the other side of the Channel could be so upset about a nipple."

I am not so much worried about adults finding this ad as much as I am about children finding this ad. My concern is this, if AV is stooping this low how much lower will they go for cash.

AltaVista has reached a level I thought only Excite could reach. I hope this hits the public big time...they obviously have no care for viewers who have absolutely no interest in this stuff and even younger users. Totally shameful.

I agree with JamesR. I am not impressed with AV's new low. A couple of weeks ago there was a post about someone wanting to protect their children from this very filth. How can you protect your children from banner ads. I would really be upset if my sister or niece found this.

Strangely, I can no longer make said banner appear.

Tried many searches but all that appears is a nice sensible skiing or credit card ad! :)

I think a few letters caused them to take a second look and pull that off.
