Search portal AltaVista said today it was a business decision to discontinue chat rooms and other community features, not an unfavorable review by the Better Business Bureau's child protection unit....
A CARU review that started last fall found that AltaVista used language in its registration page "that encourages children under 13 to misstate their ages." The group also determined that the site failed to stop youngsters from accessing AltaVista chat rooms with adult-only content. Additionally, CARU said, AltaVista did not live up to its privacy policy promise that personal data on children under 13 will not be collected without parental permission.
