Here is my web address www.topchips.co.uk
Do you think the low ranking could be due to the fact that our list of keywordds aren't referred to much during the homepage text.
Thanks in advance

Serg, I'm not Tedster, but since you posted this in the Altavista Forum, I'm assuming it's AV you're primarily interested in (not a bad idea, it just took under 2 weeks to get a site listed).

Have you looked through Altavista's suggestions for webmasters?
[doc.altavista.com...]
In number 4 they tell what they look at.

A question for you: which group of consumers are you targeting - tech-savvy people, or the general public?

That's a very good point. Alta (and others) don't give much weight to your meta keywords tag -- they look at the site and decide through their own criteria what your keywords are. Sites today can get very high rank without using the keywords meta tags at all. So yes, rewrite your copy to include your keywords.

One tag Alta Vista does look at is the title tag. Your index page is called "Home", which isn't doing you any good. You need to have keywords in your titles.

As you roll up your sleeves, you will discover that creating your site was maybe 50% of the job, and getting your site seen is at least as big a task as creating the pages was.

Definitely read the Alta Vista information Marcia pointed you to, and get a sense for their criteria. Also read searcheningeworld.com and then look through the forums here on WebmasterWorld.com.

The good news is you're half way there -- you have a site. Now the other half of your work starts. It's an adventure, I can promise you.
