A call to PT regarding pages refreshed on the 12th all dropped. PT says INK currently having problems they hope to have cleared "in a couple of days". Meanwhile, all pages dropped from search results.

Time to visit my old friend "Jack Daniels".

Thanks for the heads up, yes DNS seems to be a problem for most search engines, it's been discussed many times before, and the best is to have the pre-dns up at least a month.

Is there a thread on this subject I can be referred to?

This has been a problem at least since jan. 4th. so a couple of days...ehh... PT gave me the same answer one week ago.

nell, I had a bunch of Ink PFI pages dropped from Inktomi and MSN search results this morning, even though my logs show they were all spidered yesterday. How do you tell if you've been hit by the DNS failure problem you mention?

When we went into our PositionTech account there was a nice red "X - DNS ERROR" next to every page of one of the domains (600+ pages). Other domains on the account were crawled OK and displayed the refresh date.

Inktomi is currently working on the DNS errors on customers accounts. They hope to have this cleared up by the end of the week.

PFI = pay for inclusion?
PT = .........?

OK, so I'm tired, help me a little

One of my sites (and I thought it wasn't important!) is now showing in all major indices..am I complaining - no - but it would be interesting to know why?

SuzyUK, yes, PFI means pay for inclusion, and the Inktomi PFI signup ($39 US for first page and $25 for each additional page) and reporting is done though portals like Position Technologies, which we often abbreviate at PT here at WebmasterWorld.

The main traffic source for Inktomi is MSN.com, where Inktomi supplies their search results under the results page's 'web page' results, sometimes referred to as the 'MSN backfill' since there are results from other sources, like Overture and Looksmart, occupying higher levels in the results, under headings like sponsored listings and directory results.

Suddenly my lost Ink PFI pages are showing up in pure search again and I just saw a MSN hit in my log file on one.

I really wish Inktomi could be more stable and predictable, like Google. Can you imagine having to put up with Inktomi if they become a major source of traffic? Jack Daniels will be in great demand! Is there an affiliate program for the Alcoholics Anonymous Association?

All pages dropped owing to the DNS problem are back in this morning.

Sorry to have to go back to work. Jack Daniels and I were getting to know each other very well over the last few days. I can also remove the duct tape from the earpiece of my telephone. The client shouldn't be screaming so loud now.

Lucky you

DNS failure 01/15/03

It's now been like that for 9 days, got answer from PT saying the problem would be solved within a few days, that was jan. 9th.

Guess I'll take over the good company of JD ;)

Well, my PT report doesn't show any clue why the pages were dropped for most of the day. The traffic stats sure showed the outage, though.

Guess the Ink servers just couldn't handle my high volume of traffic ;)

Keep that bottle handy folks, I'll betcha we're in for a non-sobering experience. Will Yahoo acquire Seagrams too?

If Ink can't crawl those pages cursed by Ink's DNS problems perhaps they should allow you to substitue pages they can crawl. Why should you be locked into a domain they're having DNS problems with and also locked in by their policy not to let you substitute?
After all, these are paid pages.
