I've spent the past few hours searching around WebmasterWorld and have found quite a few threads concerning PFI vs. Free listings in Inktomi. I can't figure out if I should pay or not.

I just wanted to take a quick poll, to find out your results with Inktomi. So, without getting into the details, perhaps you could help me out.

So here goes:

Currently, my situation with Inktomi is:

- (A) PAID and results are doing well
- (B) PAID and results vary (some good, some not so good)
- (C) PAID and results are doing poorly
- (D) FREE and results are doing well
- (E) FREE and results vary
- (F) FREE and results are doing poorly
- (G) Still waiting......

Please mention if your FREE listing disappeared when you paid or if you will re-new your PAID listings.

Thanks,

- Chad

A.

I have never lost a free listing by paying.

However, I really don't think it matters if you pay or not provided you get the optimisation right (apart from timescale). If you are good you will target the right phrases and get great listings and loads of hits from MSN (all that matters right now). If you haven't done your research you can rank great and get no hits from MSN. So a combination of research and targetting along with good optimisation will work. Leave any of those out of the mix and you may as well post your money down the drain (for now).

A - PAID and results are doing well (although not quite as well as they were following an apparent re-shuffle last week)

Renewal at the moment is a yes, but that may change depending on how the Yahoo/Ink situation develops.

D. I went the free route and now Ink is deeper into my new pages then Google. And better SERP's but that must be a style issue as Yahoo and Ink like me better then Google does. I just hope it stays good though as it a pretty recent improvement.

(D) for some sites (E) for others. The sites that are (D) are large while the (E) sites are smaller. I have been thinking of paying for smaller sites for a boost.

Somewhere between

(D) FREE and results are doing well

and

(E) FREE and results vary

Since the August big crawl MSN has concictently given me about 10% of my SE hits.

(A)

and

(D)

January 2003 has been a great month for me so far with Ink. Sites that do well with Google are doing really good with Ink also :)

A & D - Have both free and paid listings. Inktomi has spidered almost all of my web pages (~400)
Free listings initially did disappear but reappeared sometime later (1-3 months?). But this only happened with the first group of URL's I paid for and submitted. After that, I could pay for an additional URL or two with no page loss. However, if one paid URL is replaced by a free page, the replaced page disappears for awhile.
Yes, I will renew. I pay mostly for "high traffic" and "seasonal" phrases - being able to swap pages, re-tune the pages and have them spidered every 2 days works very well for me. Looking forward to Yahoo....

Hmm...

- 38% PAID and results are doing well
- 00% PAID and results vary (some good, some not so good)
- 00% PAID and results are doing poorly
- 31% FREE and results are doing well
- 26% FREE and results vary
- 05% FREE and results are doing poorly
- 00% Still waiting......

I'll keep track if anyone else wants their opinion to be heard!

Thanks for your replies!
