AltaVista getting results from Yahoo directory?

Anyone else noticed this?

I just checked one of our sites for several keywords, and it's doing very well in AltaVista. The only other place it does as well is in the Yahoo directory (which it was optimised for, in the first place) . It's nowhere in Google, Fast, and Inktomi.

So, my guess is that AltaVista is getting a feed from Yahoo directory. When there are no sponsored listings or paid-inclusion pages for any given keyphrase, the top listings are coming from Yahoo.

Has anyone else spotted this?

This could be good news for those still thinking about paying Yahoo for a listing.

I Don't think they have a direct feed from Yahoo's directory, i do think they spider all the sites that appear in the "new listings" for the Yahoo categories though.
It was first seen earlier this summer [webmasterworld.com]

I missed that post before, about altavista using the Yaho what's new.

Still, with all the sites I'm managing, and seeing such little traffic, it seems that perhaps only certain keyword groups get many searches there?

For my stuff, traffic is just dismal...would be nice given the rankings if more people used it.

I’d like to say I've seen this but my AV traffic is so poor it's hardly worth thinking about anymore, one of my sites is number 3 for it's main keyword and I'm lucky if AV generates 1/2% of my traffic.

That same keyword with G is on the third page and still beats AV hands down it just goes to show how people have forgotten AV...

RIP..AV

That explains it!

I didn't know about that. This could turn out to be good. I wouldn't rule out a comeback from old AV just yet!

I'd really like to believe that, I think it's such a shame the way the net has gone over to G, but I’m not holding my breath on an AV recovery

...but I’m not holding my breath on an AV recovery

That would be pure suicide ... ;)
