[addurl.altavista.com...]
The other url redirects to which ever country AV thinks you'll want.
ie, the UK/US submit pages are:
[uk.altavista.com...]
[us.altavista.com...]
Interesting -- I've noticed "Cannot expand $APPLICATIONS_BUNDLE.format(No_submission_code_is_ava_208, property:settings.AddURLMaxMinuteLife) at /usr/local/fews-02/content/wwwroot/app/addurl/new.wm:56.20: Value is null" in the source code.
You have to select the "english language" link on some page first, after which you can reach [addurl.altavista.com...] without being redirected. In other words, people outside the US can't submit to altavista if they have disabled cookies in their browser.
No, I mean:
[addurl.altavista.com...]
I set the default to Altavista US and English language.
By default Altavista redirect to "local" Altavista, but you can click on the top right corner and choose your default "location" and "language" (nex time you load, you will not be redirected to "local" Altavista).
I don't think the problem is purely language related. It's just that only the addurl.altavista.com URL works correctly. Maybe you're redirected there (preserving the language), because you're located in the US?
They have changed their redirect system, so that it's now impossible to go to www.altavista.com for someone outside of the US (and possibly vice versa), *except* for the submission pages. For all other pages, the language and the URL are now independent from each other, and the language is controlled by a cookie.
Compare and contrast [uk.altavista.com...] and [us.altavista.com...] . Please write a 1,500 essay of the cultural differences that happen when you search on either. Marks will be docked for going over the word limit.
