Come onto AV, and noticed that everything looked up-to-date, with SERPS that seemed very relevant, is this something that has just happened, as i have had my eye off AV for a while ?

Ignore the Sponsored matches in AV, Fast, and Google, and AV's relevance is starting to reach the standard of Google and Fast. Its been that way for a while.
Our referrals from AV are slowly increasing too. It looks like people are actually using them again.

I would add that you need time to increase your ranking. If your pages are optimized and you have a good linkpopularity time by time you gain ranking.

My site just moved to #1 for my most important keyword phrase but the description still hasn't been updated - I changed it over 6 months ago and Alta Vista is still showing the old description.
Weird!

AV was a conquest a while back, so i built sites that would do well SERP wise (1-10's), however the general degregation of AV from its former glory to where it was 2-3 years ago, which includes losing its forum, here at webmasterworld, has meant that i stopped looking and caring.
Though to my surprise the SERPS did seem quite relevant and up to date, though it may be a partial re-indexing, i'm not sure.
