Inktomi - I really must be missing something

The following views are my own and may not be those of WebmasterWorld.

Am I missing something here. There is all this talk of Inks new db - but where? All I can see is a bit of shuffling of the deck. The same pure spam (and I am the proud owner of some of it) is still there.

MSN is the only real source of refers since AOL moved to Google. And sitting on top of MSN are the directory and Overture results which in a competitive situation completely kill INKTOMI.

Adding insult to injury INK is still charging the over-inflated price they were charging when they had AOL.

On top of all that, Google has been out there long enough now that MSN has got to be feeling a shift in search traffic.

I predict a year from now PFI will have joined the Edsel. I hope the companies using it as a bueiness model are wise enough not to go with it.

The internet needs Ink and Alta to avoid having all the search eggs in one basket. And at one time they were the final word on quality search results.

"I predict a year from now PFI will have joined the Edsel."

Right On. And yes to your other points too.

"The internet needs Ink and Alta to avoid having all the search eggs in one basket."

I agree. but, still, isn't it.. kind of... difficult... to root for the likes of Inktomi, Looksmart and Alta Vista when they have shown themselves to a problem in the past?

My intellect agrees with you. But, emotionally, I am still stuck on:

These views are definitely my own, but, I'll bet, are also the views of alot of people at WebMasterWorld! :)

[edit reason] It is WebmasterWorld policy not to allow mud-slinging [/edit]

Jack,

I don't want to sling mud at the (INK and ALTA). I want them to think about where they are and what the future holds. PFI is on a very slippery slope - and the internet is not very forgiving.

I would rather work with them in hopes that everyone would gain (though I don't think they feel the same about the SEO community)

ok stcrim. I agree. I wasn't attempting to sling mud. But, express my emotional position towards them in reaction to their past behavior. And I thought it was kind of funny, didn't you? :)

Maybe a bumper sticker would be a better way for me to vent with that slogan...

Jack,

No harm done! INK has only one tiny thread to cling to and that's their relationship with MSN. If that goes away there will be nothing to sell. All of INK's other partners don't amount to any real traffic.

I would love to know what their "true" renewal rate since the AOL move?

Me too. They are looking pretty desperate. We don't really know yet how they stand with Yahoo, they might have some hope of serving results to both MSN and Yahoo, if they can become relevant again.

I must say that their current move to start crawling is encouraging. And, better late than never.

How come you don't include FAST in your list of SE eggs to add to the basket? Their results are, at least, no worse than the others, they crawl agressively, they have strength in Europe and their mission is is clear. They are still my favorite to get Yahoo.
