<<It seems that Altavista is trying a serious comeback.>>
In my opinion they have a loooooooooooooong way to go (at least in the United States). They need some serious work on their algo to make any kind of comeback. I like it when you type in the name of a major company in Alta and they come up after 6-10 pages in the serps :)
I agree with you that AV has a lot of work to do to gain back market share. But it's mainly marketing efforts they need. Relevancy greatly improved on this SE lately. Market share is still in top ten for US, wich isn't that bad.

Dont blame AV if some companies cannot even optimise for their own name. :-)
Whathever the situation actually is, their efforts are to be scrutinised.
<added>Just checked more recent stats. According to both MM and NNR they where not in top 10 last month, but where the month before. So, theyr not far from top ten.</added>
I wish they would come back :)
We need good SE's that serve relevent results. I know from my own experience that I have a site (not profile)that is #1 on every major SE (not exaggerating)for many different phrases and keywords. I am within the first 100-200 SERPS on Alta for the same keywords/phrases. It wouldn't bother me except sometimes the results have nothing to do with the keywords/phrases that were used and I cannot understand even after visiting the sites where Alta pulled the keywords/phrases from.
Imagining that now...
I see, I see millions of Yahoo users, confused, reading over and over again the words, This Browser Does Not Support Frames. I see the words Ebay at the top of many listings, search For Zip Codes at Ebay, Search For Wisconsin Universities at Ebay...
I see Yahoo proudly announcing that they have increased click rates by a hundred times merely by making things more difficult to find...
I see an ocean of skyscaper ads obscured by pop-ups, I see the Thinkers50 site showing up in SERPS for Beanie Babies...
I see multitudes of Yahooligans migrating to AOL search so they can find web sites once again... :)
DG
But they have all the features on board: Expanded multimedia search, News search, good advanced search options. Along with a brand that's still alive they could make it.
A major deal would probably be just what they need fire up again
Not this kind of deal though...
