Colleague is complaining about Ink/MSN sites dropping: thought a major BOW update may explain it.

About a month ago I changed all the title tags on all my subdirectories. Ink has picked this up and the new titles are showing within the last week.

Tor, BOW is Inktomi's permanent database. You can find more information by using the site search (top left). It's basically older sites that have been in for quite a while.

Inktomi maintain several indices within the main index. BOW is the shorthand name for the Best Of Web index, a collection of around 110 million documents. A site in this index will generally rank highly, so for those who need/like Ink traffic, getting in the BOW is a real target.

AFAIK, the only way to get into BOW is to be linked to by a site already in there.

>major BOW update

I'm not seeing a change on the MSN serp I use to spot-check. Top 10 still in place.

(We had Brett put BOW [searchengineworld.com] in the glossary.)

I just got in to what I hope is BOW after a 3 month wait.

If it's a big update, it might explain the fall in paid pages.

Ok, heres the deal.
We rely heavily on MSN.com (not .co.uk) for our US traffic. A couple of days ago we were drop (dispite paying in Feb 2001). All the help links seem to point to irrelevant stuff on MSN or L$ Pay-per-click page.

The Question:
Have we been dropped from MSN.com because L$.com have gone pay-per-click or is there trouble at MSN.com at the minute?

Chris.

P.S. We paid to be in MSN we are not in through INK, however, if INK is updating could this effect MSN.

If you are not in via Ink on MSN, then you have probably fallen prey to the L$ traffic interruption problem on PPC (your 100 clicks per month has run out and they drop you).

There has just been a BOW update on Ink, I've moved up on my primary keyphrase to #1 from #3. I used to be at #1 18 months ago and changed my page - taken me all this time to get the position back!

MMT, have you noticed a major shift in rankings for PFI pages?

Hi

I haven't seen this thread so I posted another one similar to this.

Starting from May 1st our ratings dropped for some of the keywords on Inktomi-powered SE's (MSN, Hotbot, ICQ, AOL Search), and the same happened to our main competitors, too. Some other keywords still perform fine.

Some of the websites now occupying top positions are quite irrelevant.

We paid to be indexed by Inktomi on Feb, 2002. We are not listed at Looksmart, so I guess this is solely an Inktomi issue.

How can you check to see if your site is in the BOW index in Inktomi?

use the pure search at PT a paid listing will display a redirect, sites in the BOW will just show the URL on mouse over

Op's sorry bobbysongs I may not have answered your question, try searching for your URL using hotbot/PT pure results

hotbot is a search engine, not a good one :) as it only displays Ink results

[hotbot.lycos.com...]

Pure results is also another way of displaying only Ink results

[169.207.238.189...]

Tigger,

Thanks for the links.
I know what hotbot is, but the PT (position tech) is new to me.
That displays ONLY Inktomi results then?
Does that mean it displays all Inktomi results?
I am interested in finding BOW results that have been mentioned in the thread, how can we find BOW results that are different from normal Inktomi results?

Choose a competitive keyphrase, mouse over the url in the top results.
BOW pages will have a normal Url, paid pages will include redirect-west.

That's fascinating!

But it seems to me that the redirect pages are those who have paid Inktomi.

The other listings are in Inktomi thru some other means, any ideas how they got in?

And does the fact that they are in without paying mean that they are BOW?

If you do not renew your account at Inktomi will the sites remain in the index without the redirects?

submitted, maybe goo, althought I think that door has now been shut, followed a link from another site that's listed within the BOW (the best way into the BOW IMH)

And does the fact that they are in without paying mean that they are BOW?

I beleave so

If you do not renew your paid pages they will be removed.

It displays all Ink results if Return Results are set to 25 or higher (see the left column to set it).

If you set to 10 (that is the default set) the first 10 results are from Direchit.com: that first 10 results replace the first 10 Inktomi results; it means that in this case on the second page you have Ink results starting at 11th pure Ink results.
