I'm still seeing traffic, however, I wouldn't say it's much, but it's relevant.

I'm pleased to see the traffic.

Although Ive never paid AV, it doesnt seem to want to crawl my site properly. Its non-commercial, so I am assuming it should be automatically included if I submit the URL's regardless....

Nonetheless, I do get traffic from them, and it would be comparable to the "big 3" if they spidered my site properly...at least in comparison to "the more frequently updated" engines

For german sites I'm getting a fair share of traffic from AV.de as well as AV.com. Numbers have slightly grown over the last months. Infact not taking Google in the equation it's a top referrer for me.
Never paid a Cent.....

We are still seeing traffic from av. Not all the queries are relevant but the majority are. Hope they make a come back.

Traffic has built up a bit over the last few weeks.

How are you finding the paid program is it working?? I got a site in last month for free but I've been considering it for some other clients as it does seem very hit & miss if you get in or not

We use the paid spidering program for AV, but the amount of traffic that flows from the search engine is not worth it, in my opinion.

currently altavista are our 20th largest referrer in English...and even more important in some other languages

traffic from them seems to be recovering dramatically

>>>>20th largest referrer in English = recovering dramatically

I don't see how you get the end result. They need alot more improvements if you ask me.

Altavista results have been way off for us. It's odd some pages show up #1 for the term just couz the word is somewhere on the page when another site which is indexed by them caters directly to the subject isnt found anywhere. However - THe description of the site which cators totally to it is used on the other sites URL.

The sleeping giant is about to awake, they have the brand [to me they are search]. Relevance, they may just about be back there after the Black Monday debacle, I see good things ahead for them one way or the other.

AV = The next big [old] thing.

Really, NFFC? Why?

While I wasn't paying any attention to them, AltaVista re-indexed several of our sites and we ARE getting traffic from them again. Unbelievable!!

I've seen traffic from AV increasing steadily over the last few months. Up at least 200% so far.

I see a lot of crawling but the results are pretty weak. Thanks for the input, it's always nice to see an old search engine working for someone.

If Altavista can come back with a good database, an aggresive spidering, ranking process, a frequent update (less than a month) cycle. Throw in a little promotion and keep the costs down. . . they could do it.
The Brand Name alone gives them a HUGE step up.

well then MINN, the question Altavista might ask in response to that is "why bother?"

Most search engines that started great and moved on to becoming "portals" later realized it wasn't profitable, advertising dried up and they found out no advertising = no revenue. PPC is the future of a successful search engine business model, and relavancy in a free submit DB really isn't an issue, or much of a concern. I'm sure you know most of this but I don't think your Christmas list is going to happen, it would be nice though.

I have seen Scooter hitting up new sites and coming to old sites regularly, but as I said before, they need to make some changes to get themselves back into the race.

I agree that they have the branding and all of the tools in place, but they refer absolutely NO traffic.

The same source that gave Google a whooping but probably accurate 46% of search engine driven traffic worldwide has AV as #4:

1. Google (46.5%)
2. Yahoo (20.6%)
3. MSN Search (7.8%)
4. Altavista (6.4%)
5. Terra Lycos (4.6%)
6. Ixquick (2.4%)
7. AOL Search (1.6%

We usually get 1 or 2 referals a month from AV, lately it has gone up to 30. Scooter has been out in force in the last couple of months too.

Our AV traffic seems higher than the norm, maybe because most sites we do target only very few keywords, sometimes only one phrase, so we don't need the deep spidering of Google/Fast.

Lots of "If's" for AV, but it would be very nice to see this once powerful search engine revitalized.

Relevance and frequent updates are the key factors - is AV making the attempt? There have been a few indications... many more are needed.

I'm still surprised to see anyone posting of increased traffic from AV, it amazes me that anyone actually uses that search engine anymore, but then again I talk to a lot of people outside SEO and they're favorites always seem to be Excite, AV, Hotbot and Lycos....of course the ones that find Google never go back to another SE.

For me in Spain the title of this thread sounds like a contradiction of terms.....(:

After adopting paid spidering program the traffic was increasing.

At the beginning low. In the last month it was a lot better.
