Hate to duplicate post but . .

The key for any of these programs is to find the sweet spot.
The sweet spot is in between keyword terms that are highly competitive and difficult to rank under, and those that have low useage and will not generate enough sales.

really, you do have to follow that method. It takes a littl research to find out where Inktomi fills the search void. When you find and hit though, it will be worth it. The most traffic I've ever seen from an INK listing on my site is about 150 hits a day, I'm sure some have had a lot more, but most get a lot less.

We are typically happy with 5-10 hits per day (per page) from Inktomi, as long as we keep that as an average, and assuming we are getting this coverage in quite a few pages.

However, we have seen as high as 250 visitors per day on some popular misspellings.

I would agree with the others. You have to really do the work ahead of time to determine whether it is feasible to use Inktomi programs on a page or not. If you will be buried by directory listings, don't even bother! If you will be at the top but it still won't get any traffic, again don't bother!

Misspellings are key to a good INK listing. You have to remember most keywords are heavily optimized.

good point MINN, don't rely on stemming or any kind of word association, covering all your keyword bases is a good method.

>If you will be buried by directory listings, don't even bother!

It won't pay to bother for MSN in those cases, but for certain markets AOL can be a gold mine. It takes a little figuring out the AOL demographics and even with discounting MSN, some products can warrant a lot of attention for the sake the of AOL crowd alone.

>If you will be at the top but it still won't get any traffic

Good point, kwb, and that can sometimes take a little thinking ahead. One of the beautiful things about these Inktomi pages is that you can switch pages within the domain to accomodate seasonal fluctuations in traffic. That, imho, is one of the major selling points and where a lot of the value lies. It can be a boon to the small business person on a budget who deals in products that can be seasonal. Some will be dead for traffic at certain times and bring in some that's highly targeted at other times - motivated buyers.

Example, now in April from February Overture searches:

Phrase 1 - 252 - irish itemcategory for peopletype
Phrase 2 - 408 - peopletype summeritem

The demand will multiply as summer gets closer. And where will it sell the best? AOL!! So now's the time to prepare, especially considering that the same pages will serve to fulfil shoppers needs with Inktomi and Google both.

Then there's more content on the site, and the broad peopletype itemcategory happens to have 4173 Overture searches with less than 100,000 pages returned at Google. The specific for summer has 5,240 pages returned at Google.

As a bonus, there are only 3 directory listings for that specific summer item at MSN with no PPC. Then there are alternate phrases, the opportunity for links with people with related highly topical pages, and also peopletype2 and peopletype3. Then come the Fall and Christmas holidays and the pages can be switched for those. Guess who's revving up for peopletype summeritems?

IMHO the key is to figure out the potential for a given product line and look at Inktomi (MSN & AOL) and Google both. Some don't lend themselves at all for Ink, while others can do an equal amount with Ink and Google both.

Good point, not sure if anyone's ever covered the movement of INK listings by season. It's tough to get a really good listing that delivers a lot of traffic, but you can do it, and using methods like targeting seasons and researching your keywords at regular intervals to ensure the best time to "spring" your optimized site can be worthwhile.

Hi Everybody,

I have a question on the Inktomi fees per url. For one of my sites I paid for three Url's and 6 month left to be crawled.

I am trying to add one page from this site and one from a new site.

My question is, why am I asked to pay $39 when I thought all Url's after the first should be $25?

I am using the Verisign facility. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I use positiontech, they have a decent service and INK crawls everyday, changes are usually visible within two days.

I paid 30 for the initial URL and 15 for each additional, last I checked it was the same fee. Not sure about versign, but you should look into PT they're decent and they have a Pure Search where you can check your Inktomi listing without interference from other sites algo's like Hotbot, AOL, and MSN.

got to love the raised fees. I haven't resubmitted yet since my one year term won't be up till the end of the month...now that I've seen the raised prices I don't feel the extra money is worth it. That looks like money that could be spent on other more effective things like PPC.
