First time I've seen

Well, first, I don't get that many hits from AV, so this might seem like a non question for some of the big hitters here.

Referral in my logs is of this form:
[search01.altavista.com...]

The results are the same as on the regular AV site.

I can't duplicate any redirection to search01 from www. Is this just a mirror site if www is busy? Or is it like a www2 or www3 ala google?

This one is news to me, thanks for pointing it out. None of the stuff i'm working on these days gets Altavista traffic (too much flotsam in their serps for the keywords I'm gunning for)

however, I'm sure that others might have some info on this one...

your observation does sound about right, anyone can confirm?
