We have a site that has been in Altavista forever and today I searched for the domain and it's gone. Not that we get much traffic if any from AV anymore but I am curious as to why this site was dumped. Should I try to contact Altavista?

I am sure you won't lose any sleep because they dumped your site. Email them and resubmit but, do not pay them.
I am of the opinion that if I have a site I want it to be listed anywhere and everywhere as long as it is a free listing. Get back in the database, we do not know what the future might bring.
