I probably missed it ... but since when do you have to register to use Excite search?

I can use Excite (USA) without registering.

Are you using a national version?

For Example using excite.it you get this message:

Crea il tuo Excite
Già registrato > Il Mio Excite Nuovo Utente > Iscriviti gratis

Is a message to suggest you to register to Excite: you have the opportunity to personalize your "Excite start page" and to get a free mail address.

But you can use it without a registration.

As soon as I saw Liane's message I loaded excite and sure enough the registrations message was there. Now however, reloading the same site from scratch, I am taken to my.excite with full access.

A glitch perhaps, or the shape of things to come???

All of my clients who've had sites where you have to register to use the site have either dropped the practice or gone out of business. I would guess that if Excite requires registration, it will backfire.

(I haven't checked Excite myself, by the way, because I'm surfing with javascript turned off, and the new Excite is another of those brilliantly designed sites that won't load at all without javascript. It's not worth resetting my preferences to try it).

I have been thinking the same Robert, if the engines start *requiring* registration they will be in for a BIG surprise and backlash from general searchers.

When they went out of business, I got email saying I had to re-register for my.excite. I refused cookies, and now it seems to think my name is "false."

I get this message [mosthatedwomenontheweb.com] when I go there.

I am using excite.com. I tried it 4 times yesterday and got the same thing each time. Today I got in first time with no "register" requirement. It was either a glitch or they were trying something new over the weekend. I will not accept cookies to use search engines ... or much else for that matter.

Try searching at ask.com without cookies. What a pain!
