Hi guys. I was checking one of my clients in hotbot.com and, for one result, their homepage came up, but with a title and description that didn't match what was on the page. Turns out it matched the looksmart.com entry.

I'm probably slow on the uptake here, but any idea how this could happen? I would have presumed it would have been the title and description on the page from slurp..???
:)

I've noticed that MSN has my LS listing in the directory and then right under it in the webpages, the LS listing is there again EXCEPT that it is now an INK listing. I'd like to know how in the sam hill the LS listing for my home page fell into the hands of Inktomi-especially when one of the pages I paid PT to index was my home page, which is nowhere to be found.:(

I'm experiencing the same situation with my INK descriptions. Since I am using paid submit, my site is spidered every day, but the description and title come from the looksmart directory. (gag! I *hate* the description). I hope that someone can shed some light on this!

Ink has been showing the Looksmart listing for a few months now. They have never resolved this since they started PFI. This is another reason why I have not paid to get in.

Neither the PFI with Ink or Alta makes much sense to me right now. Too many bugs.

Strange enough... My problem started BEFORE I subscribed to PFI.

Pauline,

Inktomi does use the title and description from Looksmart if they find
a URL
match, this is displayed in a search query. They use both Looksmarts
title
and description and the title and description from the page itself in
their
algorithm. This should actually benefit ones rankings.

We took a quick look at the page in question and see that it is a
frameset.
Inktomi does read the frames, the pages within your frameset are the
ones
you should be optimizing.

how does the looksmart description improve your rankings when its usually written by an editor while you have full control over what you put in a spidered title tag and meta description???!!!!!

I suspect that the fact that your site is in LS at all offers a rankings boost, similar to the ODP/Google or Yahoo/Google effect.

LS editors are very cooperative about revising inappropriate descriptions, the guidelines for titles seem to be very strict. Reviews/revisions are free for 30 days after your initial listing purchase. And you can request a review/revision at any time if you're willing to "buy" a new listing. I've had very good results with both of these approaches. I requested a description revision for a site that was in the directory before the pay for play program began. It was addressed promptly, and surprisingly, they chose to include several additional pages from the site unasked and at no cost. This ain't Yahoo! ;)

I believe MSN listings are based nearly entirely on LS descriptions, possibly AOL as well. It's been worth the effort for me to acquire good descriptions, AOL is my top referrer for several sites, followed by MSN...

Once your LS description is as good as you can make it, use PT's frequent spidering to tune your site and enhance your listings on non-MSN INK partners.
