Inktomi - suggested methods of entry

Hi All

I have decided to take another look at Inktomi after concentrating my efforts on other engines, so I am not as up to date with the techniques as I once was, I have a few questions so bare with me....

1. Paid for positions through PositionTech...
I understand that the pages submitted are non-spiderable, and links are not followed as they normally would be. This would suggest two types of databases, paid for and the normal free listings. I have paid for the first URL (unfortunately it was the home page, which I read afterwards was the wrong choice !) however I am faced with paying for a lot of pages, if I want the site indexed in this way. Have people found this to be the most effective way of getting indexed by Inktomi ?

The free listings used to be triggered through submitting to answers, canada, hotbot etc. (Canada are using dogpile results now) These methods do not seem to work as well as they once did, what methods are used to get a whole site indexed without shelling out big money.

2. MSN
I have had very limited success with this engine, but as it is now increasing in popularity amongst users, I need to be listed better than I already am. Is it just a matter of when I am listed well in Inktomi I will show up well in MSN ? Although the rumours that I have been hearing suggest that MSN will be jumping ship soon and not using Ink anymore (Canada / Dogpile...MSN / ?)

3. AOL
again the same questions as for MSN...what is the best way to gain entry to it.

Thanks in advance.

Rusky, a paid index page is not always bad, it depends. I've done fine with a couple of paid index pages.

For Ink, getting found through a link from a site that's in the permanent database and regularly crawled works for a lot of people.

For MSN, it's a good LookSmart listing, and for AOL a DMOZ listing.

What's the scuttlebut you heard about MSN? Any hints where they're going?

hi risky

1 I don't think ink is using two databases - just putting the paid entry before the free ones. I too did submit the home page but they have now all been switched around. You have no choice with your other pages if you want them in, you have to pay.

2 I've normally found if you rank well in hotbot the MSN ranking is pretty similar, but MSN will of course show looksmart first which will somewhat push you down the rankings if you're trying to get in with a popular search term. So try searching under MSN until you find results showing from Web results (global) on the first page then optimise for that keyword which will hopefully get you a good ranking on MSN

3 Same as above but also ODP will help

Hi Marcia, Togger (sorry couldn't resist it)

Thanks for the quick replies.

So if I get a link from a site that is listed in the INK return pages, then I will get a visit from an INK spider that will crawl my site in the normal fashion.

I have recently submitted to Looksmart.co.uk, again this will just be the index page, the process will be that MSN will be aware of our site will it then send a spider to traverse my site or will it just be aware of the index page ?

Tigger : You said...<<I too did submit the home page but they have now all been switched around>> did you mean by this that you had positiontech list another page instead of the original one you suggested to them ?

Is getting into HOTBOT just a matter of using their add URL mechanism, as again I have had limited success with this engine although I do submit to it (it is not all bad I have great success with Google, Lycos & Fast :)

Thanks again for the info

even after the insult :)

I don't know about the link as I've only had success of late with paid pages, nothing has got in free.

MSN will show the looksmart listings, which is why a killer description is what it's all about with looksmart

PT will allow you to switch pages around.

If you submit to PT this will get you into hotbot

Thanks Tigger

It was just a little dig after the Risky instead of Rusky :)

So after the PT submission Hotbot will find it and then soider on from there, so it is just a case of waiting....like 99% of this business.

Well, the link into Ink DOES work, without getting buried. You MUST have patience as i waited about twelve weeks for the test to be completed.

If you can't wait, then, you must consider the pay route.

engine

Thanks for the tip of the link didn't know about that, all I have to do now is find a site that's ranking in the old database, would it be best if it was pointing to the ink optimised page or the index?

>so it is just a case of waiting....

If you do go down the PT route waiting is something you don't have to worry about I submitted some new pages on the 15th that are now showing on most partners.

Good luck Risky :)

My experience has been that as long as the site is in the Looksmart directory(or Yahoo, or ODP), this should be enough for Inktomi to list you.

Always make sure that you have one good link somewhere and then submit to Hotbot or anzwers.com.au to get into Ink the free way.

You can also just wait until Ink finds the link, but this seems to take longer.

I have had luck with this.

Inkotmi is penalizing submissions via the free add url system. I tried getting high postings on Inktomi for 2 months and then subscribed to Position Tech and 2 days later I had 1st and 2nd page listings for very competitive terms.

My experience has been if you have a prominent link somewhere, your site is NOT penalized. If you do submit without any links coming in, you will be penalized at first, then when Ink finds a link leading to you, the penalty is lifted.
