At long last I have been able to track down my contact at Inktomi UK!
According to him, the current state of play with the database is that it is up and running again, however the algorithms have been changed. I did ask him for any clues and of course he was unable to give me any info :(
He did say, however, that Inktomi are doing their best to eliminate all spamming and make searches relevent to the keyword/phrase entered.
I did ask him about my existing rankings and my collegues :) that the only way these could be found was by doing an exact match search and he replied that over time these will raise in ranking.
I asked him about the pay for submissions and he said that unfortunately he didn't have any idea on the charging structure but knew that it would be implemented shortly.

thank you - looks like you have confirmed that we need to learn to work with "real" content for INK - rather than doorway and gates.

We are in the middle of a rebuild - actually, new site complete with content (themes) as a new INK mission - will let you know what goes on.

One thing I still question - under our KW's all of the top pages are really bad and old doorways plus lots of 404s - wonder how they think that's and improvement???

the impression I did get from him was the rankings that were currently high on the searches had been within the db for sometime.

This does confirm my thoughts, as most if not all of my clients sites are only visable if you do an exact search, one client in the skip hire business is nowhere to be found unless you do an exact search, but if you do a non-exact search for skip hire, oxfordshire.co.uk comes in at # 9/10 not bad considering the date is 1/1/70. Think we could say it's been around a while!

So hopefully over the next few months and after a couple of refreshes of their db, our sites should start to show properly.

The hard thing is waiting as so many of us are used to seeing fast results with inktomi. As Confushus would say "wait patiently, drink hard and results shall be yours"!!!!!!! (believe it or not I found this in a fortune cookie)
