"Star Trek: Enterprise," the latest incarnation of one of the most storied franchises in televised science-fiction history, will end its four-season run in May, broadcaster UPN says.

UPN said on Wednesday the last episode would air on Friday, May 13. The series generated 98 episodes over its run, although it struggled in the ratings.

This is incredibly disappointing for fans. The show was really just starting to get off the ground by filling in so much of the trek history (relations between tellarites and andorians, the prelude to the earth romulan war, etc). And this is the first trek spinoff series not to make it to seven years and also the first to go out without a planned ending as did TNG, DS9, and Voyager. It's a sad thing for trek fans definitely.

Featuring thee most horrible theme song of any television show in history, coupled with Rick Berman who wasn't able to think of a single creative idea in the absence of Babylon 5 to rip-off, this was hardly a suprise...

Sad. Especially since the episodes this season are so much better than the earlier seasons. That whole temporal cold war was sooo boring.

A sad day indeed. Yes, the theme song was bad, too bad many fans didn't give the show a chance based on this one criticism alone. The writing was as good as any of the series.

I had the pleasure of seeing Gene Roddenberry speak at the University of Alaska about 20 years ago. He would have LOVED this series.

Looks like Fridays will have to be occupied with the new BSG on Sci-Fi.

the theme song did bite. but if you'll remember: it's typically taken each trek spinoff about 3 seasons to get going. that was the case with TNG and DS9, and also voyager. Enterprise was starting to become more appealing.

Star Trek was nice for the years where there where no Star Wars, but I only liked the stories where there where a little war or something other alien thing, the other where mostly boring, it was almost like Dallas, still its a little bad for the TV business, but they will be back.

This is sad. And even sadder that this fits our stereotype that it made the first page :)

Even sadder that I replied and even sadder that I watched every episode :)

Very sad. A lot of people were critical of this series, but it was pretty good as long as you gave it a chance. Also, most of the other Star Trek series got better as time went by. For example, Next Generation got better after Tasha died, DS9 got better after Cisco shaved his head, and Voyager got better once 7of9 showed up. I'm sure Enterprise would've improved greatly as well. Too bad we'll never know.

I think I watched 2 or 3 episodes. It just never captured me.

Mind, TNG, Deep Soap Nine, and Voyager didn't grab me either, and I gave all of them a chance.

Of all the 'Treks', I found this one the hardest to get into and DS9 my favorite. Laura, on the other hand, loves it. She will be disappointed.

Hmmm. I see where you're going there. Perhaps T'pol should have shaved her head and been killed, only later to be resurrected with larger boobs.

This blows, the only reason I have cable is so I can get UPN to see Enterprise, I guess I'll just go back to rabbit ears:(

Enterprise wasn't written with any sort of wit. Dialogue is predictable - you can guess about a third of the lines (in real time) based on the previous line. Captain is goofy. Most interesting part of the show is the variety of softcore T'Pol scenes, like deconamination shower.

I *love* star trek and I couldn't watch Enterprise. I just couldn't buy into the theory that earth has *one* spaceship and that they think the most important thing to do with it is go battle injustice across the galaxy. Also, like I said somewhere else, "Too many alien nazis."

The theme song wasn't that bad, only that during all of the first season I thought it was sung by Rod Stewart...

I was sceptical at first, but actually the plot was better as TOS, and it made Kirk & Co look like a bizarre dream.

Great show... As a true Trekkie, I will miss it.

Very sad. I've been watching it since it first aired. It has definitely improved each season and I would imagine it would only have gotten better.

I had a bad feeling when it was moved to Friday night.

Nice one! But that's why it's obvious that the original Star Trek was the best. It was the only one that didn't rely on breasts to get ratings ..... and before someone else says it - Shatner's doesn't count ....

I can't say that I'm a "trekkie" so no instant loyalty was given to the new installment of the mythical world of co-operation that is Star Fleet. I AM HOWEVER a big Scott Bakula fan, Quantum Leap was one of the greatest shows ever but one can't help feel that the "show up, save the day, cry a bit, everything's okay" theme from QL wasn't copied ever-so-slighty for this.

I think the main problem with the Star Trek versions Voyager, DS9 and Enterprise was that they tried to develop the characters too early. They gave us too much "soap opera" and not enough story. Again, this is where the original shone through as you only got the slightest of insight into each person's character each episode which made you feel as though you were "getting to know them". In public, we always get on with the people that we learn about on the way - I'm sure every one of us has had that guy/girl that has come up to you and you know their whole life story within 10 minutes! You never bother talking to them again, do you .......

.... dear lord, I don't believe I just took part in an online Star Trek discussion .... I've sat here for several minutes deciding whether to click submit .... do I really want people to know I watch Star Trek? What will the neighbours say?

The problem with the show was it just wasn't that interesting. I think more happens in an average Voyager or DS9 episode than 4 Enterprise's Plus let's face it people are sick of the enterprise. I want to see a Time Ship series damnit!

The only good thing about that show was the vulcan with the nice rack. Other than that it was a huge pile of crap that should never have come out in the first place. Even Voyager was better, and man, that show sucked.

Really liked the original.

Really, really liked Next Gen.

Liked Voyager as long as 7 of 9 was parading around in her tight outfit ordering other-worlders to "lower your weapons and stand aside".

Hit or miss with Deep Space 9.

Never got into Enterprise at all.

I liked it better than the last couple of ST series, but I never watched it much because it was on UPN. I find it hard to get really sad over it, with Serenity (the Firefly movie) coming and the new BSG TV series starting off so amazingly well.

Of course, there's also Roddenberry's Andromeda (which started off well, but currently has me thinking "eh... whatever"). I think Andromeda and Earth: Final Conflict would have been better with the ST universe. Vulcans doing medical experiments on humans and exploiting them as soldiers against the Romulans, Kirk and Spock fighting to the death on the bridge of the Enterprise, etc. The spin-offs that Paramount did were lame by comparison.

I never saw firefly when it aired, but saw it recently on dvd. It was AMAZING. I was literally sad when I viewed the last episode. Hopefully, serenity will do the series justice. Unfortunately, enterprise never quite inspired the same reaction. But...if they had given it some time, I think it might have gotten there. Upn got cold feet. Maybe sci-fi will pick it up the way they did stargate and sliders.

Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor not a Nielson statistics hacker...

Seriously though, give me 5 or 6 seasons more of Battlestar Galactica instead and you won't hear any complaints from me. It's today's version of classy scifi and reminds me of B5 and Farscape in subtle ways. Also looking forward to Serenity (the Firefly movie) though really would have liked 5 more seasons of that too. Oh and don't get me wrong, SG-1 is decent but Atlantis is such a cheap, silly knockoff. I was barely into Andromeda, but their writers have lost their minds completely this season.

Anyone old enough to remember Space 1999 with the kewl looking ships? I'd like to see a resurection of that idea, people living on the moon... or mars for that matter - it's about time we had a series to inspire that (though I am not sure how'd they keep it interesting every week - look over there! a SPACE ROCK! lol)

yep, remember the whole shebang: commander koenig, eagle one, moonbase alpha, main mission. at the time, it was cutting edge. saw an episode recently, though, and it doesn't hold up too well on some of the special effects, but neither does trek tos.

Me too... that's half the reason I'll miss it, the other half is T'Pol.

OK, the problem with this season isn't star trek, it's the idiot that put enterprise up against SG-1. Whoever came up with that bright idea should be fired. The smartest thing UPN could do at this point it sell the series for 3 more seasons to the SciFi channel, just like ShowTime did SG-1.

sci-fi should definitely pick it up. and upn was definitely dumb to put the show up against sg1, a show that has lasted into 8 seasons. if anyone saw the new enterprise episode this evening, it's pretty clear that the show is starting to hit its stride.
