Machine Names

any interesting themes?

No matter how many times I do it, whenever I have to name a machine I have a block... like I'm naming a kid or something. Right now, I'm sitting here trying to come up with new names for 2 servers and I'm stuck.

Talking to my friends, I've heard some interesting themes come up.
examples:
pair of servers called Ike and Tina... collectively called the 'Turner Cluster'
Lab named with characters from GI Joe.

Anyway, I'm looking for some ideas on themes.

Anybody got any?

When things go wrong you could stand there and either scratch your head in tearful angst, fiddle with your tie (real or metaphoric) in frustration, or cry, "That's another fine mess you've got me in to..!"

Our first server was called Dilbert, shortly followed by Catbert. Then we became a bit more inspired so we had Routebert, Webbert, Mailbert...

Another group sticks to a Star Trek naming scheme. They have Riker, Worf, Seven and a machine called "TheDoctor".

Greek and Roman Tragedy? My machines are: antigone, orpheus, prometheus and sisyphus. :)

I saw a documentary on PBS or Discovery channel where they showed a bank of supercomputers at the CIA named Happy, Grumpy, Sleepy, Sneezy, Bashful, Doc, and Dopey.

Personally I use mythological gods, demi-gods, and heroes.

I used famous surf beaches around the world -- which can also help with clustering by breaking down the beaches by continent or country.

Another good one is car mfgs (Honda, Volvo, Suzuki, etc.)

The person who set up our servers (before my time) must of been, uh, well, a unique individual because they're all named after natural disasters... Blizzard, Twister, Earthquake, Cyclone, Tornado, Avalanche and even a Tsunami.

My Simpsons character farm was my favorite.

Client machines were the simpson family members, flanders family members, etc.

The search for intelligent (or at least original, please) life goes on. The imagination of (hopefully) well-paid individuals is depressingly constrained to the following:

Star Trek
Simpsons
Dilbert
7 dwarves
Ancient gods/characters
Weather features

The worst:
One of our NOC's uses the S.T. names, another uses Star Wars names. Can't be specific as a security precaution.

We use animals, bear is the fad now, My Mac is called Papa Bear, the laptops are Yogi & Boo Boo & have a server called Grizzly

Last place I worked (believe it or not) used parts of a toilet for machine names. The mailserver was 'cistern'.

Some wierd people worked there...

Those people weren't wierd, they were AWESOME. Parts of the Toilet?!?! That's freaking hilarious and inventive! I mean, here you are talking about them now... it obviously changed your life.

There is a cluster of US military servers that use the names of Simpsons characters. I used to see it is my refers.

What have expected? Naming them Beethoven, Tolstoi, Rachmaninov, Goethe, Bronte, Sokrates... or what?

A friend of mine works in a company, where the main server is named Bill and the tape backup server is called Monica. Because it had swallowed the tapes once. Um. You call THAT original?

Inspired by this thread I'm renaming my home machines. Here's what I've got so far:

Bob
Doug
Hosehead
BeerHunter
Back Bacon
Elron MacKenzie
Jelly Doughnut
Beauty eh?
Take Off
A beer

It took 2 days of thinking and I decided to go with breweries/beers. I named one server Guinness and the other Pilsner.

Names of future machines will be Newcastle, Pabst, Latrobe, Miller, and of course my personal favorite (saving for my machine when I rebuild): Anhauser-Busch or maybe just Budweiser.

As you can see, the possiblities are vast and nearly everyone here has been involved in the naming process. There's also implied hierarchies with Breweries and the Beers they make.
