10 Days to go

...An attacking minded, well rounded, youthful England team with plenty of talent and imaginiation went onto the pitch last night to face a inexperienced Japanese side away from home, and showed us nothing new, at all!....

Bar a few moments of genuine skill it was worrying to watch. Is that how they will march out against the French next Sunday?

There is 10 days to go till the first ball is kicked and as an avid football fan I am looking forward to some excellent matches - and with the tables set like they are there will hopefully be no shortage of excitement. But England look tired :(

The French side are awesome, but remember the world cup? The Dutch and the Spanish are beautiful footballers but are they beatable? and the likes of Germany and Italy can never be ruled out even if they are not the forces as they once were. There are also outsiders in the form of the Czech Republic and Croatia, and the stalwart Sweden and Denmark. Not to mention the hosts!

Not one match looks like a no brainer, every one a challenge. I would love to see the English football team win something in my lifetime, but am I being that overly common thing; an blindly optimistic England fan? I hope not.

So who do you think has the best chance this time?
Anyone lucky enough to be visiting Portugal in June?
Anyone taking part in Fantasy Football? (I am yet to pick a team)

Ta, (a very hopeful) Limbo

Last night when Sol Campbell "scored" I thought that there was definitely no foul (I am a Scot!).

Watching reruns on this morning's news and in the cold light of day I now see that there was some interference with the goalkeeper. That can be the only reason it was disallowed, albeit a not very convincing one.

Oh well! World cup in two years time.

A goal disallowed, agony in extra time, missed penalties :(

Still, it's the World Cup in two years :)

[ursmeier.ch...]

The ref has a web site. I wonder how long it takes before enough "votes" against him raise his PR skyward!

He has an e-mail address and contact form. How useful ;)

Before I even thought about sending my thoughts to him I went out of my way to double check the action using the BBC's virtual reply service. - [bbc.co.uk...]

I am positive he was wrong! Now shall I :

for ($x = 0; $x <= 100; $x++ )
{ &mail($ref,"it was a goal");
&contentform($ref_page,"it was a bad call");
&sign_up_for_pr0n($ref);
&photoshop_random($refimage,@animal);
&spam_footy_blogs($ref_hump_animal);
}

:)

In fact what about a cron job as well?

Please note the code above is a joke - Don't do naughty things in Perl (That's what Python is for:P ). When all is said and done he was "just doing his job" badly!

If you see the actual TV footage, you'll notice there is an arm of an English player pushing down on the goalkeeper's shoulder, thus preventing him from jumping up and knocking the ball out - I believe this is the foul that was called.

Looking at the reply I dont think that his arm was actually pulling him down at all and the position of the ref he could no way have seen what was going on.

The linesman who did have a better view on the other hand did not flag at all.

Oops, au revoir.

Congrats to Greece. It just shows that heart can take a team very far.

Yes, the Greeks remain the great positive surprise of the tournament and send the defending champions home. Congratulations.

The GK was definitely impeded to some extent. He was prevented from punching the ball away. If you were Portuguese you would probably be congratulating the ref for a great decision.

Can we extract some tendenciess?

1. Geography: Nations with large populations have been dumped.

2. History: Nations that have won international titles before are having a hard time.

3. Psychology: Bravery wins. Team spirit wins.

Next casualties: Holland and Denmark?

My favourites for the title: Czech Republic.

My favourites for the title: Czech Republic.

Yep they look really strong! Flair, experience, quality and team spirit. I guess they'd be odds on now France are out too (he he he! - sweetens the blow a little)

Defanjos, are you one of the MA Portuguese in New Bedford? I had one of the best meals I ever ate in the US in Portuguese restaurant near there once :o)

Yes, Portuguese food is yammy.... but, I am biased :)

Well, we are in the final, and the way Portugal is playing, we have a good chance.
I hope my heart can take all this excitement.

I am 45 min away from New Bedford (Attleboro)

I know Attleboro. I used to visit the states on a semi regular basis with my then job. My base was usually in a hotel in Norwood. I also managed to take in a Major League Soccer match at Foxboro when the New England Revolution were playing the Metro Stars (about six years ago?)

Anyway, best of luck in the final!

Boa sorte!

Figo is the ultimate Portugese comeback kid

Say that again. He is unbelievable - it is almost like he was back in his twenties. I think now he can retire happy.

I'll be watching today to see who they are going to play Sunday. I hope it is the Czechs - that will be a great game.
What a 4th of July that will be :)

There is one aspect that we have not discussed: The clubs. Which of those clubs with many players at Euro 2004 will have been really happy with the general performances of their players so far?

Wow, the Greeks made it to the final.
Congratulations to Greece.
They are truly a dangerous team.

I'd prefer Portugal had to play the Czechs.

Kalimera!

You have to hand it to the Greeks. They may not be the most glamourous team in the tournament but they have managed to get there and they have made lots of good teams look ordinary in the process.

I will probably be going to somewhere in Greece on holiday in September so I hope that they win!

Who would have put money on the Greeks? and I wonder if anyone did?

I Still have to fancy The Portugese to take the trophy, but then the Czechs?, the French?

Who knows? A very different championship this time. None of the big guns in the final. Not to say that Portugal are not a big team, but they don't have the history of Euro Cups that others do.

Should be fun to watch as a neutral.
