...An attacking minded, well rounded, youthful England team with plenty of talent and imaginiation went onto the pitch last night to face a inexperienced Japanese side away from home, and showed us nothing new, at all!....

Bar a few moments of genuine skill it was worrying to watch. Is that how they will march out against the French next Sunday?

There is 10 days to go till the first ball is kicked and as an avid football fan I am looking forward to some excellent matches - and with the tables set like they are there will hopefully be no shortage of excitement. But England look tired :(

The French side are awesome, but remember the world cup? The Dutch and the Spanish are beautiful footballers but are they beatable? and the likes of Germany and Italy can never be ruled out even if they are not the forces as they once were. There are also outsiders in the form of the Czech Republic and Croatia, and the stalwart Sweden and Denmark. Not to mention the hosts!

Not one match looks like a no brainer, every one a challenge. I would love to see the English football team win something in my lifetime, but am I being that overly common thing; an blindly optimistic England fan? I hope not.

So who do you think has the best chance this time?
Anyone lucky enough to be visiting Portugal in June?
Anyone taking part in Fantasy Football? (I am yet to pick a team)

Ta, (a very hopeful) Limbo

Myself and a freind are currently applying liberal amounts of red and white paint to our faces ;) (red cross on white!)

Off to watch the game at a huge screen set up in Leeds city centre.... the tension mounts...

What do you guys think about Greece?
They are coming off their biggest win ever (2-1 Portugal) and their biggest tie ever (1-1 Spain).

Bring on Russia.

Greece - Group A Winners.

What do you guys think about Greece?

Sometimes it is better to be the underdog.
Greece has a lot of heart and determination.

I just hope Portugal beats Spain, and Russia beats Greece :)

"Sorry guys, but this is Portugal's year. All they have to do is use the entire Porto team :)"

That is so true. What is in Scolari's head? We'd better beat Spain! Yes, I live in Portugal and am enjoying watching this on BBC :)

Woke up with print of the St Georges cross on my pillow :) And have taken leave of one desk for the one nearer my bed today!

Way to go Rooney!

Next step Croatia...

What do you guys think about Greece?

Thay qualified top of their group in the preliminaries with the most clean sheets. They are the real dark horses of the championship and set to top their group again with a win over the lacklustre (and injury plagued) Russians.

This is quite good news for England. No offence to the Greeks, but England are likely to finish second in their group behind France, which would mean we'd play Greece in the Quarter finals. That would be the preferred game over the winners of the Portugal VS Spain (biggest match of the tournament so far) who both have more seasoned internationals players.

Glug, sploosh, glug, glug.. (sound of me rehydrating)

If England get a good result against Croatia I hope Rooney doesn't pick up a yellow, it'll mean him missing the quarter final.....With him in the team (and Ledley King back in defence) I fancy England to beat anyone.

Not actually how it works. All yellow cards are recinded after the group stages so all players start with a clean slate, big *sigh* of relief.

Rooney has proved himself ready, and will supply more goals. Could do with some Owen magic in the next game so he gains confidence, and much more volume from Beckham - he's too quiet a captain.

Ledly can and will play more, I am sure , but you cannot play him ahead of Terry.. yet.

Not quite, if they have one yellow card, it is forgotten and forgiven, if they pick up two in group stage, they're missing the quarter finals.

You're absolutely right. Jon champion explained the very same last night. So I'm a little nervy for the 4 yellows English players are holding...

Well Done Portugal!

depending on tonights games England may well be playing them in the 1/4 finals!

Great job! I trully wish Greece wins the Euro ;)

Sorry guys, but this is Portugal's year

It seems you 're rigth... they have already taken us out (i'm from Spain) :(
My congratulations to Portugal for yesterday's match: they played better and they won.
And, those from Spain, think that we'll have a new chance in World Cup 2006 :(

PS: I've been tempted to make some comments 'bout Iñaki Sáez, but they should have needly banned. So, at least, let me say @#$**%&!

I just need to make sure that I can get to the train station on time to get the train home from work. I hope the London underground will be a little quieter - I don't want to miss the game tonight.

Bad luck to Spain last night... God knows why you didnt put Morientes on sooner though! He was way better than Raul in the first 2 games and he only got 10 minutes against Portugal. Madness!

C'mon England tonight! only 3 hours to go!

I havent been this excited since Google launched AdSense ;)

Should be a tough match for us though, they have a good record against us!

A tough match indeed. I can see us winning it though, but we need Owen to be scoring goals... I think Rooney may pick up another yellow card at some point so may miss a game, and we need someone else to take care of the goals if he does.

Yep, very tough. But I think we are tougher ;)

Hard for them to man mark 6 players. Showed that last night - they concetrated on Owen and Beckham. Left it open for Scholes, Rooney Lampard, and Gerrard.

Big worries about set pieces! We look hapless and disorganised from free kicks and corners.

I think Rooney may pick up another yellow card at some point so may miss a game,

All teams single yellow cards are wiped for the finals. I assume that's why Scholes and Rooney were substituted. 2 cards would have meant a ban for the Portugal match but as it stands we are going into the quarter finals 'clean'. Nice.

...didn't know that. thats great news!

I agree about the set pieces though. We look v shaky. We also seem to give away a LOT of free kicks around the penalty area.

I'd like to see Sweden go through tonight too (I'm a Larsson fan!).

France just got through last night, did not play well for 80 minutes and then two goals at the very end of the match from Thierry Henry. French buggers!

I think the Czech Republic will do well this year, they are playing very good football.

Anyone here from the Czech Republic?

Czech Republic will do well this year

Definitely. Nedved is a bloody magician! Shame I picked a dud from their team in the fantasy football! (still on top though <smug grin> ) I believe Rooney has a lot more to prove too! OK I am a biased Evertonian, but I think more goals and possibly the golden boot beckons!

Well I can dream can't I? I guess I can also dream that Rooney will be playing Everton football in the autumn...

Portugal vs England - that should be a good game.
I especially like that everyone is predicting an easy English victory - I can smell an upset coming :)

My prediction:
Portugal 3 (Goals by Nuno Gomes and Cristiano Ronaldo)
England 2 (Goals by Rooney and Scholes)

I can dream....right?

Asked if she was sure of the rules of the game, she said: "I know when you hit the goal you score points."

It is great to see England winning. I am still in shock from the France game. Lucky that Rooney is playing so well as Owen isnt really doing anything these days. I will be watching Deco play for the first time. Am looking forward to seeing him in a Chelsea shirt next season after all I have heard about him.

Yeah, what's up with Owen? He's not on form at all, is he?

I think he's played very well but not scored..yet. The way he and Beckham have been marked has been unbelievable. 2-3 men all game. I think we'll see goal from them both before the tournament is over.

The Italians just got beaten - incredible result considering they were one of the favourites. Tomorrow the Germans or the Dutch will be following. It's all getting very interesting!
