My router came in yesterday. That's when my router crash course began. The first thing I learned was that it's virtually impossible to hook up a USB DSL modem to a router.
After trying everything I could think of, I decided to call my local DSL provider and see if I could swap out modems. The answer was "no", I'd have to buy a new modem for $150.00. I asked to talk to someone else. I was connected to a nice gentleman in their DSL billing department. I explained how I'd come out cheaper just changing over to cable modem (same monthly rate, $40 installation charge, free modem).
Suddenly I was offered the new modem free (I have to pay $14.95 shipping for UPS second day). Then he took $5.00 a month off my DSL service.
Deal done, problem solved. Anticipating a new set of problems, but riding happy for the time being.
BTW, for those of you who say cable is a lot quicker than DSL, I had my father do a speed test on his cable modem. It was only slightly faster than my DSL. Not enought to make me change. Especially now that my DSL monthly rate is lower than cable.

Actually that is one of cables drawbacks.
It is per switch. I could be one block over but on another router table and have speeds that beat DSL. It all depends on how many users, what they are doing (downloading that new porn ;)) etc. that will effect the data pipe. So it really is not apples to apples IMHO.
Think of cable as a non managed hub sharing with all nodes hooked up on the hub VS. DSL which is more like runniong off of a switch where the port is dedicated to that user and not effected by the rest of the nodes.
Just my take on it.
