Imagine a smartwatch that could send faxes, though...

Who uses fax these days? Serious question.

This is my question, too.

I mean it's staggering but some companies are still producing new units for sale:

[brother.co.uk...]

According to brother, a dedicated fax machine is a

simple [...] method of sharing information"

with a

compact design

which

fits into any office

That's really good to know because I (and I'm sure most people) have always found email, SMS, instant messaging, social media etc. fiendishly complex and excessively bulky.

Dropbox alone takes up two thirds of the office, so my office would definitely benefit if I replaced it with a fax machine.

It's been known for Lawyers to use this as proof of signature, in addition to it being a more secure form of transfer.

My doctors and lawyers still use fax machines, mostly because they need copies and can transmit the required data and have a record of it having been sent, timestamps. My prescriptions are faxed to the pharmacy I specify and I don't need to lose them. Years ago I accepted orders via fax and got orders from around the world that way - but yeah, that was many moons ago. I would be unhappy to learn they had switched to SMS for that.

All the hotels we used to work with in Korea required faxes for reservations. Despite the fact that they were connected to our online reservations system...

Here in Canada (at least Ontario province), doctors and pharmacists use fax, for the reasons Not2Easy mentions. Not sure about lawyers here, but I do know that they accept PDFs of documents by e-mail. Long live Fax!
