Microsoft has submerged a datacenter under the sea to aid cooling, and has removed all air to help reduce corrosion.
It expect the datacenter to be operating for up to five years, and during that time it'll be irreparable.

Cool idea! (pardon the pun.)
Isn't most of the energy in powering data centers used for cooling?

On a side note. If these data centers are submerged in the ocean, how will that be handled by the GDPR? The server will be effectively be stateless and therefore not covered legally by any jurisdiction. Kind of like a floating casino.

Literally, an ocean of data, how salty! We're drowning in data! Leaks in our datacenter are taken seriously! Our algorithms detect currents underlying the data we collect!

Kind of like a floating casino.
Or, in this case, a sinking casino. Not the mental image Id want associated with my ventures, but then, Im not Microsoft.

But Microsoft is still liable.
By the way, there is/was this if you want - [motherjones.com...] (the Principality of Sealand, a micronation that claims Roughs Tower, an offshore platform. I don't know if their project to host servers was done or not.

Gives new meaning to one's business being Underwater....
And assuming not all the servers run Windows, Linux helped put Microsoft underwater.

All data will be encrypted with Davy Jones' BitLocker.

Waiting for the environmentalists to start banging on their laptops and phones about damaging the oceanic environment. Coming soon to a theater near you.
