Looks like seti has made good progress, got an email from them :

On March 18-20 2003 we travel to the Arecibo radio telescope
to re-observe the most promising "candidates" produced by our search so far.
There is a chance that these new observations will yield
the first real evidence of extraterrestrial life.
Thanks for being part of this history-making effort!

hate to dash hopes but the word "promising" looks like the keyword there.

Uh, "most" promising...leads me to believe some are less promising than others.

Who told them that it was promising? The extraterrestrials?

Hmm... I wonder what they consider to be the difference between a "real" and an "unreal" evidence.

I also wonder how they define "life".

No, don't bother to tell me. I don't really care. There's nothing new under the sun. :)

I did not see any reference on the SETI website
on this. Where's your source.

Well brotherhood of LAN, if it wasn't on the website maybe the e-mail mentioned was/is a hoax?

You'd think something that significant would be on the website too.

just addressing the question of "first real evidence of extraterrestrial life?"

evidence and promising.....

>significant

that was the idea of highlighting the word promising - it would be more than promising if it was significant ;)

I think the SETI @ home project is kind of silly, sacrificing fossil fuels (namely computers left on in workplaces after hours) to tackle this. Why not have a little patience and wait until our grandchildren's grandchildren can turn Pluto into a 360 degree antenna that runs on solar. ;)

I really don't know JonB... I'm just still taken by the novelty of it all. Using my computer for the benefit of humanity... just seems cool.

Hmmm, I didn't get one of those emails - unless I deleted it out of habit. You'd think that with all of the hours I've donated to them they'd let me know how important I am! ;)

why? (no lame - because the universe is so big excuse)

Surely the time would be better spent researching cancer or something that can actually HELP people?

<<<why? (no lame the universe is so big excuse)
that like everything else is only half of the equation....
Do you honestly think we are the only intelligent life out there?

Well I know all the patrons of WebmasterWorld are...but thats beside the point.

Although I do agree I should start curing cancer or at least my typing handicap.
