this is horrible, find latest updates here:

[news.google.com...]

Columbia was at an altitude of 200,700 feet over north-central Texas at a 9 a.m., traveling at 12,500 mph when mission control lost contact and tracking data.

NASA, while not saying the shuttle had exploded, broken up or crashed, warned that any debris found in the area should be avoided and could be hazardous.

There were reports of debris seen falling.

to be more accurate it looks like it is breaking up and coming in with mutiple trails... so not a complete explosion... maybe still some hope

officially all they are saying is they have lost contact with it

CNN seems to be the news leader on this. I'm not seeing anything on Google news about this yet.

no google is indexing the top news sites every 5 minutes or less, you have to actually type in space shuttle:

[news.google.com...]

'Seems to be that there is no way the shuttle can be saved' - BBC quoting nasa comments

There is, so far, no official statement.
But is seems to be taken for granted that the shuttle is lost, but not known why.
WARNING - Don't approach any debris which could be in northern parts of Texas, could be 'very' toxic.

NASA statement - There is no possibility that the space shuttle could make a safe landing due to the height and speed involved.

They are saying the ejector seats that had been installed were not designed for this situation and would be useless :(
The shuttle they were using was originally built in 1979? NASA buys some computer parts for the shuttles off EBAY?!

90kms high and seveal times the speed of sound.
Debris mainly over north-central Texas.
Such a shame that this should happen......
Debris reports from east Texas recieved by ch8 news.

A real shame... they have been quite successful since the Challenger disaster. :(

I doubt though a major setback... the spacestation is still manned so at least one more flight needed.

The only good thing about this tragedy is that the debris field came so close to falling in the huge population of Dallas, Texas. Instead, it fell in a largely unpopulated area of the state. So many more lives could have been lost.

The local sheriff is asking people to check their yards and fields and report any debris. People in the area reported hearing a sonic boom that lasted over a minute. Many people first thought what they heard was the sound of a train derailing on the local track.

Such a tragedy. *G lowers her Texas flag to half staff*

NPR has pre-empted normal programming for coverage of the investigation. They just said that there is some very limmited hope that the crew might not have died, though it's remote. Although the crew cabin is tough enough to have potentially come out of the break-up intact, it wouldn't exactly have been a controlled landing so the crew would probably have gone splat inside the protective cabin. They are sending out search and rescue teams anyway, on that remote hope.

They were going 12,000 miles per hour. Lowest speed estimate I have read is twice the speed of sound. You cannot survive that with a parachute, and the moment they put that parachute on it activates a beacon, which no one has detected. Sigh.

That particular shuttle was the oldest one in use and this may have been why it all has happened. If this is yet another tragedy over cutting corners to save money it's going to be an even bigger nightmare. [abcnews.go.com...]

Yeah. Now they've ammended themselves and said "no prospect" rather than "a remote prospect" for survival of the crew.

Very sad news to start my day. As a forwer employee of the Rockwell International, this hurts. We did not see OV-102 (Columbia) as the oldest orbiter, rather the first operational vehicle and a very proud accomplishment.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the crew.

Watching CNN it was indicated that during the initial launch two week ago launch debris struck the shuttle. (don't know whether this was mere spectulation or not).

Regardless... complacency is our worse enemy... there's nothing routine about traveling at mach6 let alone going/coming back from space.

I keep thinking about the family and friends, who were waiting for the landing, to celebrate their homecoming. :( I feel for them, deeply.

Ya, was watching TV in my 3rd grade class when the challenger thing happened...still can't get that image out of my head, either.

Very, very sad. I hope that the family's and friends of those who were aboard can all get through this.

In what way are people profiting from it. do you mean trying to sell found components?

If so I hope they pay attention to this...

NOTE TO PERSONS IN THE AREA: All debris is United States Government property and is critical to the investigation of the shuttle accident. Any and all debris from the accident is to be left alone and reported to Government authorities. Unauthorized persons found in possession of accident debris will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

SAD DAY!

I am sure ebay will pull listings for any part of the shuttle, real or fake. But it's not stopping people from working around that
like auctioning memorial domain names and other disgusting profiteering/commercialism.

I hope ebay puts their foot down on all that.
