I Fixed One Of The Major Flaws In My Shelby Mustang Today

I replaced the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires with Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials. No more having a VW beat me to the next light because my tires are spinning out of control and car is fishtailing into next Tuesday.

Goodyear should be ashamed to put their name on the OEM tires. At the very least they could leave off that F1 Supercar bolony and just call 'em Goodyear Grease (a perfect description of their traction ability).

Next I'll be working on my car's only other major flaw.

Don't keep us in suspense ... what other major flaw?

That VW will have factory installed traction control ... More grip is better obviously, but sometimes being smart is better than being strong :)

Yes, the right tires make a huge difference. I learned this late in life. You don't have to own a Shelby Mustang to appreciate good tires. Cheap tires will kill a workable ride.

Years ago I had a Isuzu Trooper. It was fun and cheap. But, the ride was terrible. A friend told me to put some Goodyear Wranglers on it and that made all of the difference in the world.

I also had a MR2 Turbo that I put sticky Yokohama tires on, from mail order. Heh. Sweet. Worth every penny.

No way! I won the 1994 Battle of the Imports with an MR2 Turbo (1991). I ran that 1/4 mile in 11.67 which was a corrected time of 11.17. That was in 1994! I think I was running Pirelli P7s at the time, I think. Oh, we were pushing about 340 HP during those runs. Go AEM and MoTeC!

So lawman, what is the other major flaw!

Oh, did you know tires have a six year shelf life? There is a DOT Date of Manufacture on all tires.

Lack of power. Soon to be rectified. :)

That VW will have factory installed traction control

According to the manual, I also have traction control - supposed to be on by default. So far there is no evidence of any traction control whatsoever. Haven't pushed it hard enough in the twisties for stability control to kick in.

Don't forget the third flaw. The owner should be none other than rocknbil. :-P

Haha, rocknbil, let me know when you're coming. I'll cook a turkey and let you drive the car.

Hey, I'm just down the street... can I drive it too?

I was expecting the major flaw to be more along the lines of 'not enough time on the street'.

Took her to the track today for the first time since I put the Mickey Thompson's on. Quickest run was 12.227 at 116.86 (1.892 60 foot time). Fastest run was 12.285 at 117.05 (1.941 60 foot time).

Next up - smaller pulley on the supercharger. :)

A good set of tires give a car a whole new feel. It's not just the tread pattern, but the internal structure and the actual compound of the rubber that makes a difference.

>> Smaller pulley. What sort of difference does it make to the noise? more scream from the SC or have they refined the nouse out?

Noise somewhat increased. Not a problem since I want some noise. :)

Not on the horizon at this point.

Ah, you could easily handle a conservative 50HP shot. I made over 200 passes in the MR2 using a 60HP shot set to engage at full throttle only. I had this little blue button on a coil cord. I'd let passengers squeeze if they were up to it.

I remember years ago having the car detailed and there was this killer ZR1 Vette in one of the stalls. It belonged to the mayor's wife. She had this 15lb bottle in the trunk attached to a 150HP shot, I can imagine what a squeeze in that felt like. Ummm...

If you're running low to mid 12s now, you could touch that high 10s mark if engine management is on par with demand.

Note: I have no clue what I'm talking about, at the time, I had this small team of mechanics working on the car. After that MoTeC went in, the first in SoCal at the time, nothing could touch me. Not even those rotary beasts that sound like chainsaws on crack.

Fast is when you have to give the competitor four and a fly by. Heh!

I wonder what that Shelby Mustang will do with a little squeeze in it? Not the Mrs. either. :)

Burst of excitement over!

P.S. 104 Octane does wonders too.

My Mustang GT 2006 also had the factory Pirelli on, damn they suck, now I got Pirelli P7 those are really good.

About Shelby 2010 they compare it with the Camaro SS with a few extra horses 505HP, but it beat the shelby with Goodyear tires on, now they have Pirelli on and guess what, Shelby really came away and beat the Camaro.

As someone who cuts/splits a lot of wood ( sculpture and firewood ) ..another cord ( split with what rocknbil tells me you call a"splitting maul" ) today ( then it rained ) ..tomorrow will be sunny :)))

chainsaws on crack

Heh Heh :)) here ya go "chainsaws on crack" [youtube.com] is the real "search string" ..for those who didn't already know what to do with "that stuff cluttering up the garage" ..:))

PR1 probably knows this stuff already ..or donated the piggy ..

Alrighty, here's whats in the forseeable future. Exhaust, race gas/add timing, throttle body. I'm not interested in ET below 11.5 since the track requires a roll cage and 5 point harness at 11.49. I really don't have much of a problem with the 5 point harness, but I'm not putting in a roll cage.

As to having a bottle in the back, I've had to jump off more than one person because they left the bottle heater on. :)

AFter installing the pulley I went to the dragstrip today and picked up over 3 mph and lowered ET by about .28 seconds: 11.945 at 120.17 mph.

Amazing difference! What was the size difference of the pully wheel?

When car developers build things, they need to look at it from so many points of view. Envoronment, power, economy and so on, but its small things like that that allow the owner to take the car in the direction they want.

You should probably have a 5 point harness just because. Any racing whatsoever is usually much safer when you're strapped in with a 5 point harness.

I really don't have much of a problem with the 5 point harness.

Being the lawman, I didn't think you would. :)

But I'm not putting in a roll cage.

Well, if you keep it up e.g. 11.945 at 120.17 MPH, you'll need to let off the gas toward the end of your future runs. :)

Congratulations! Anything below 12.0 seconds is to be highly commended, that is fast, especially at 120.17 MPH. Wish I could be there! With the M. :)

BTW, even though it was a personal best, I was lined up against a gosh awful for real drag car and lost that race. Don't know how fast it went since times weren't posted today and timeslips were torn in half. Link to timeslip:

My reaction time looks slow because they were using a pro tree and I didn't know it.

the next flaw you need to fix on your mustang is a new set of wheels.

seems ford is always afraid of displacement and wider tires.

V8 mustangs have the wheels of a V6 f-body.

See msg 1. As to the wheels, the OEMs are unique to the Shelby.

right, I know you have unique wheels but they are still skinny!

If somebody made a 19" drag radial in the right size, the 9.5" width would't be a problem. They just don't make a 19" drag radial that will fit these. When I wear out my street tires, I understand Hankook makes a street tire in the right size that gives way better traction than the Goodyears.

i like the grip of DR's but i don't like that they are fast in only 1 direction.
