Facebook's friend suggestions

Invasion of privacy?

Do you ever notice those friend suggestions on the right-hand side on your FB page? I'm not sure if this is documented anywhere (I imagine it is), but it seems as though Facebook is scanning your email's contact list, such as you have on Gmail.

When I signed up, I don't remember granting this kind of behavior. Am I missing something here? Was I not paying attention?

Anyways, I think this is a clear violation of privacy, unless I inadvertently agreed to it.

Facebook does scan your email account.... BUT you have to give it your password and agree for that to happen, Facebook doesn't try to guess your password. You either gave Facebook your password and don't remember.

Or...

It isn't really scanning your Gmail. The "suggested friends" list is also generated by how many friends you have in common, and it uses common workplace and networks to draw lines to people you may know.

It may be a coincidence that you have some of those people in your Gmail account already.

I've often wondered about their friend suggestions as well. I use FB primarily with friends and not so much with my business. I took on a new client about 3 months ago. He is NOT related to anyone of my FB friends, yet about 2 months ago, he began showing up in the suggestion list.

I've had similar things happen with other people that I know, but are not associated with any of my friends or networks. It isn't through Gmail since I never gave them the password, but I am curious how they are making the connections.

There are a lot of privacy options that let you choose "Friends of Friends". I believe it just does something like this when making suggestions...

I have had a similar experience, but upon investigating I found he belonged to 4 of the same groups as me, was in the same network, attended the same highschool, and had friends of my friends.

I think there are a lot of factors it considers when generating that list. It is highly likely that there is at least 1 full time developer who sits around all day and comes up with ways to draw connections and add to the logic.

I have seen the same thing. My conclusion was not that Facebook had scanned my webmail address book (I never gave it permission) but that the other party had given Facebook permission to scan their webmail and Facebook was then making a suggestion to me on that basis.

Facebook is a spam machine. I get messages telling me a friend has recommended a test or a link and they haven`t sent anything. Facebook is total garbage imo.

I have been wondering about some of those unknown people among the friend suggestions for my Facebook account. I supposed that they were friends of friends, but there may be another explanation:

My Gmail address which is connected to that account, is one that several other people would have liked to have. Some of those people instead chose addresses very similar to mine. The result was as might be expected: Through the years I have received lots of emails which evidently were meant for someone else.

I suppose that I am still in the address books of some of the senders. If they give Facebook access to a Gmail or other address book which contains my address, it may mean that we appear among each other's friend suggestions.
