doesn't matter that you dont actually own windows xp either. by using it your just 'using it' and not owning it :D I have XP on my work computer just because it feels more like Mac OS X :D All cute and bubbly

If you don't allow it to dial home at least once it won't operate. The dial home feature is handy for those folks that never seem to get around to updating.

Really? You mean XP requires a call back to MS to work?

I guess that is an anti piracy thing, MS keeping tabs on who is doing what. There doesn't seem to be much outcry about it though.

You have to "activate" XP and XP Pro within 30 days or you get shut down and it is for anti-piracy protection. The license designates 1-2 CPUs. Anything past that and I assume they shut the offending OS down or send the Piracy Police.

I know that people trying to pirate copies of XP are having problems with it so it must be pretty effective. The underground forums post hacks but none of them seem to work, much like the "IP Spoofing" programs that are offered everywhere that only spoof UAs.

You can either activate XP online or call Microsoft.

Personally, I'm pretty sick of XP - had it at home for over a year (with a new PC) and would rather use 98 or 2000.

You can't go by those numbers. Thats the number
of copies of XP that has been sold.

In the corporate environment, one generally buys
XP Pro, just to have the license. Then we overwrite XP Pro with Windows 2000, because its
much more stable and the TCO is lower, and also
you have downgradeble license rights.

Some day we will install XP Pro, maybe after a
couple years and a few more service packs.

How do you accomplish that "overwrite"

I can understand a format, then an install, but XP won't let you "overwrite" it with an older OS.

Most of my visitors don't seem to be fond of XP, though a bunch of them still plug along with W98.
The current month is fairly close to the numbers from back in May and June. I dinna take time to look at the other interim months.

Back when 98 came out I picked up a copy of 95SE (not upgrade)
for $45 at a computer show.
When XP came out got 98SE (not upgrade) for about $90,
later got XP Pro (not upgrade) for about $140.
Tried XP and went back to 98 and I still notice 98 runs around $90
at the computer show and people are still buying it.....
