I have to say, I pay pretty close attention to my post count - and I noticed that while my actual posts were deleted, my post count still gave me un-earned credit for all four of those no-longer-existent posts. Crazy though it might seem, this bothered me.
Turns out there was no way to adjust my count downwards - but Brett and jatar_k jokingly (I think) suggested that I post here in Foo, where the posts are not counted, to even things out.
Bingo! So here I am posting in Foo, maybe for the first time ever. I can't remember for sure.
Nice place.
Anyway, this whole series of events made me realize that I am always aware (within one or two) of what my WebmasterWorld post count is. Does this make me obsessed? Or, does this make me normal?
Is anyone else so proud of posting on WebmasterWorld that they always know how many times they've done so? And (here's the telling question) do you every mention that number to your colleagues?
I'm betting yes - but I'll be interested to see. Am I alone in my obsession, or do others feel the same way?
AWA (who usually posts only in Forum81)
My answer is no, a number is just a number, and keep in mind that anything posted on this or any other message board can go away at any time for any reason, so post count and messages, in the grand scheme of things, mean absolutely nothing. So what is the value of even posting then?
If, somewhere along the line, my pointless ramblings and uninspired prose make a single difference in someone's life, or inspire them in some way that makes a positive change for them, it's all worth it. But overall, I post with the complete and total understanding that no one cares, it's the nature of humanity (If it's not about ME, IT SUCKS!) So how many times I do that means nothing at all.
Holy cow, I just looked, I ramble A LOT! :-P
And ANOTHER pointless piece of trivia - I just passed my 3rd anniversary here and didn't even bat an eye! LOL . . . .
I didn't know that posts in here didn't count to your total though. So I got something out of this other then a laugh.
I don't care about post count, barely notice it. I still might celebrate my 1000th one though.

After about 50 post I finally caught on that there was a meter running. Duh!
Now I glance at it every time. Seems like it took for ever to get past 100.
I cant imagine getting to 2,000 or some other astronomical figure like some.
Maybe its the same as getting older, it just happens gradually!...KF
Want to know what I think? If not, just read on...
I watched my post count, but I didn't even think about how correct it might be. I never shared it with anyone. But I secretly waited for that day when I would become a Senior Member. Oh the unbridled joy that day brought to my heart.
Now, go step outside, look at the sky, listen to the birds, breathe some air, and then go back inside and get some work done.
I don't know why but this has me laughing.
ditto.. I have no idea where my post count is or if it's even important - I suppose the 'algo' means that I need to prove my 'research' and take note somewhere along the line, but perhaps other factors have recently come into play. (paranoia setting in) so let's analyze the facts, in list format obviously.
ermm.. maybe I've got a variation of the the same obsession? ouch! where is the nearest WebmasterWorld Rehab center?

I also tend to look at the post count if I don't recognize the nick and the post is good, informative, interesting etc. I post in a lot of fora that don't tally and never really think about post counts.
Tedster would still be a legend if his post count were 10.
AWA, Does that mean you're going to be as obsessive about checking your post count several times/day as many of us are about checking our AdSense stats several times/day? :)
Almost certainly, LifeinAsia - but fortunately it only takes about half a second to be fully up-to-speed. ;)
AWA, it's so nice to see you around these parts.
Thank you! Nice to be here. Now glad to have made the error that sent me in this direction.

I am right there with you on the 'Senior Member' thing, grandpa. I even emailed my manager with the good news on the day that occurred for me. Later in the day I got a very short congratulatory email from a Director at AdWords. I actually get a lot of support for being a 'customer advocate', and posting here - which is pretty cool, IMO. ;)
I believe the quality (not quantity) is what really matters...
Agreed, menial.
I would be obsessed if I would get paid for posting here ;)
Hah! Good point, RonPK. How lucky am I?! I really love posting on WebmasterWorld - and would even turn down a raise or promotion if it meant that I couldn't do it. Really. I said that to my manager as recently as last week.
AdWordsAdvisor...Cute..haha. Does Google employ a lot of OCD people? ;)
Good question, davewray - but I'm not sure. Tomorrow morning, maybe, I'll go stand on the roof, watch the parking lot - and see how many of my colleagues go back to check to see if they really turned off their lights. Not that I ever do that myself, mind you.

I thought you all rode shuttles [nytimes.com] into the office.

I can't speak for the surfboards, but the shuttle is pretty cool.
When my aging 1990 Mazda finally gave up the ghost last year at 198,600 or so miles (I was trying to get to 200K) I decided to go car-less for nearly four months - and took the shuttle every day. I really enjoyed it. Car-less would have been very difficult, had it not been for the shuttle.
Of course, I did also need to walk 1.25 miles each way to-and-from the shuttle stop. ;)

I wouldn't give up, I guess, even if it means pushing the car from home to the office and back. You could probably ask the rest of the Google staff to help you do that.
wait wait, that is 1400 miles, hmmm
Would be nice if WW gave out boxes of chocolates or something if a topic is selected for the home page…
<waits hopefully…>
